Valentine's Day and Project Linus - Two February Favorites!
The Valentine's Day parties will be held this Wednesday, February 14 starting at 1:30. As you shop for Valentine’s Day cards for children to distribute at school, please keep in mind that cards may not contain any type of candy or food (due to our food allergy guidelines). Also, parents who have signed up to volunteer at the parties will need to bring a driver's license to the office when checking in.
During the month of February we are participating in Project Linus which is a philanthropic organization that provides blankets for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. Yesterday, students in grades 1, 3, & 5 participated by decorating blanket squares that will be sewn into full blankets by the Project Linus volunteers. This activity took place during their indoor recess.
Next Thursday students in grades K, 2, & 4 will participate in this wonderful activity.
The South Park Student Council has been working with the South Park PTO to organize this activity, and all of the materials for this project have been provided by the PTO. I have posted some pictures on our school Facebook and Instagram pages and I Tweeted some out at #SP109.
We hope activities like this one teach the children that they can help make a difference in others' lives. To date, Project Linus has donated over 6.7 million blankets to children!
Have a wonderful weekend and be safe out there!
Yours Truly,
Dave Sherman
Student Art Show - Grades K, 1, 2 - March 1
Please join us for our first art show of the school year on Thursday, March 1, from 6:30-7:30 pm.
This show will highlight works from our kindergarten, first and second grade students. Each student will have two pieces of art on display in the school halls and MPR. We will also have an art scavenger hunt that students can participate in. We hope you'll join in on the fun!
Stuck Inside? Read More!
Stuck Inside? Read More!
The last couple of weeks, we have had to keep the children inside on many days due to the cold weather. This is the reality of living in Chicagoland, and it appears as if we will have to deal with the reality of spending more time indoors than outdoors for a while longer.
Well, what better time than now to add more reading to our children’s and our own lives? Here is an interesting “Report to Parents” published by the National Association of Elementary School Principals that provides nine great tips for parents who are looking to increase the level of reading in their children’s lives outside of school. Here are the nine tips. For a short explanation of each, please check out the publication via the link.
The Rewards of Reading!
Always have books on hand.
Keep it up by encouraging kids to read new materials.
Focus on their interests.
Read out loud together.
Make it a routine.
Be a patient listener.
Cut the distractions.
Ask questions.
Read beyond books.

Great America Read to Succeed
Think Summer!
Each year South Park School participates in the Great America Read to Succeed program. If students read on their own for 600 or more minutes between now and February 22, they will receive a free ticket to Great America!
Information and tally form were given to the students last week. I also have linked it HERE. Tally Sheet reading logs will be due Thursday, February 22, 2018.

Odds and Ends...
- All visitors to South Park School MUST bring a valid driver's license or state ID card to the main office before entering into the building.
- When parking in our Birchwood parking lot, please remember that our preschoolers are dropped off and picked up by the west end (closest to the school). Sometimes, their parents' cars can block a parked car from exiting for a few minutes. To avoid that, we suggest that you park closer to Birchwood Avenue.
- Please follow our morning procedures, and drop your children off at their regular doors.
- Please make sure that your children come to school with warm clothing for outdoor play. We go out for recess if the temperature (including wind chill) is 10 degrees or higher.
- If your child is going to be absent from school, you need to call or email us by 9:00 that morning. ** Call 847-945-5895, ext. 2103 and leave a message OR ** Email Ms. Brennan, our nurse, at nbrennan@dps109.org
