KSD140 Connection
September 2022
It’s hard to believe that a month of school has come and gone already! It’s been great to see teachers and students back in action. The buildings are full of energy, and our students are ready and eager to learn. Thank you for your partnership as we strive to create positive and productive relationships with our students and their families.
One of our goals this year is to celebrate and inform our school communities about the engaged learning and student-centered activities happening throughout the District. We are committed to increased communications via newsletters, websites, and social media accounts.
Please visit our website or follow us on social media to stay up-to-date on the latest from KSD 140!

National Walk & Roll to School Day - Wednesday, October 12
Gather your family, put on your walking shoes or biking gear, and celebrate National Walk & Roll to School Day with us on Wednesday, October 12, 2022!
D140 families are encouraged to walk or bike to school together using our Safe Routes to School guides:
The school with the most student participation will earn special recognition and school-wide popcorn day!
Our hope is that more students will choose to walk or bike to school on a regular basis.
For information regarding pedestrian and bike safety, please check out these tips from the Tinley Park Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
Calendar Change
This year, D140's Winter Break will begin with a Half Day on Thursday, December 22. Elementary schools will be dismissed at 11:10 am, and middle schools will be dismissed at noon.
This is a change from the 2022-23 school year calendar originally released to families. The adjustment to Winter Break will also affect the Last Day of School. The 2022-23 school year will now conclude with a Half Day on Friday, June 9, 2023. Elementary schools will be dismissed at 11:10 am, and middle schools will be dismissed at noon.

Ed Tech and Media Center Teams Launch Back-to-School Lessons in D140 Schools
Over the past month, members of D140’s Educational Technology and Media Center teams helped students and teachers launch into the new school year with lessons in device care, password/login protocols, Apple Classroom, and digital citizenship. A BIG THANKS goes out to our Media Center Directors for lending their time and expertise throughout the process. Way to go, team!
C.O.R.E. Team Receives Special Recognition at September Board of Education Meeting
At September's Board of Education meeting, the seventeen volunteer members of D140's C.O.R.E. team were recognized for their commitment, innovation, and leadership within the District. These individuals receive specialized Apple training throughout the school year and provide additional educational technology support to the students and staff in their schools.
C.O.R.E. stands for Community, Open, Reflective, and Empower - actions that embody the "core" of our mission to integrate engaging technology strategies in our learning environments.
Thanks to Krissy Bellamy, Caryn Bridges, Jamie Chmura, Michelle Enders, Mary Rose Gianotti, Pat Griffin, Kelli Juodikis, Felicia Kunelis, Nicole Laricy, Amy Loftus, Destiny Mangano, Stacy Reuter, Peyton Richmond, Ashley Salvador, Jodie Talluto, Kathy Vasilopoulos, and Heather Wood for their outstanding efforts.

Fire Department Gives Fire Safety Tips to D140 Students
As part of their National Fire Prevention Week campaign, our local fire departments visit KSD 140 elementary schools in September and October to educate our students about all aspects of fire safety and prevention. This year's theme is "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape." It reinforces the critical importance of developing a home escape plan with all household members and practicing it regularly.
Tinley Park Librarian Visits D140 Schools
This fall, Mrs. Zulevic from the Tinley Park Public Library will give book talk presentations on Monarch and Bluestem Award books to students in D140 elementary schools.
The Monarch Award is given annually to an author and/or illustrator of a book voted as their favorite by participating K-3 children in Illinois. The award is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) and is designed to encourage Illinois students to read critically and become familiar with children's books, authors, and illustrators. The award is named in honor of the Monarch Butterfly, Illinois' state insect.
The Bluestem Award is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list. Named in honor of Big Bluestem, which is the state prairie grass.
