8th grade English - OHS

Mrs. Minyard

Welcome to our classroom!

I am trying something new with a weekly newsletter so parents can stay up to date with what is going on in our classroom. As we wrap up our first semester in English 8, we will finish up our novel unit, and prepare for another novel unit in the spring, along with additional writing units and a Poetry Unit (which will actually be fun!) Please encourage your students to read while they are on break; I have a ton of books to choose from in my classroom that they are welcome to borrow!

December 4, 2015

We are currently reading The Outsiders, which is one of my favorite books, and the kids seem to love it so far! Today we had a friendly competition between the Greasers and Socs. The goal was to understand how and why the Socs have advantages in life, and why this has an impact on what they do. However, the Greasers are very street-smart, and use these smarts to their advantage. You will have to ask your 8th grader who won!

They have an assignment to read Chapter 9, and fill out a connection sheet over the weekend. They are doing daily journal entries which pertain to the book to help them make connections between the story and themselves, as well as daily activities to better understand the book. We have talked in depth about groups within schools and society and how they help make up our identity.

Next week, we will finish the book, and work on their final project. We will also watch the movie, The Outsiders, so the students can compare and contrast with the book. The may bring a snack and drink during the movie days.

Finals: If your student has a C or above, and has missed no more than 3 absences in my class, he/she will not have to take the final. Otherwise, they will have a final, which will consist of concepts learned throughout the first semester.
