What’s happening in the Music Room?
Our patriotic song of the month is You’re a Grand Old Flag, by George M. Cohan, and our composer of the month is John Williams (1932- ). We are so excited to be studying music by the composer of the film music for Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and many, many other films.
1st Grade: Our students will be learning about fast and slow as well as short and long sounds. Some of their songs are Hunt the Cows and The Old Gray Cat , as well as some Halloween songs, like Pumpkin Stew and Halloween. The first graders have also been introduced to the percussion instruments in our classroom.
2nd Grade: The second graders are building stronger rhythm and pitch skills. They will be reviewing quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes with voices and instruments. They are learning more and more pitches of the scale as well. They are working on Bate, Bate; Trot, Old Joe, and Toaster Time, as well as Pick a Pumpkin, and other fall and Halloween songs.
3rd Grade: The third graders have been continuing work on Rocky Mountain, learning how to read the rhythms and pitches and do a folk dance. They will be continuing this work with songs like Lil Liza Jane, Uncle Joe, and Halloween Night.
4th Grade: Our fourth graders are singing rounds, such as Are You Sleeping and Ghost of John, in multiple parts. They are continuing their “Mallet Madness” unit and are practicing proper mallet hold while playing Bate, Bate and other songs. They have also been learning about the pentatonic scale.
5th Grade: The 5th graders have begun their ukulele unit and will continue throughout the month of October. They have learned the C, A minor, and F chords and will continue to work on strumming technique with songs like Yellow Submarine, This Land is Your Land, You Are My Sunshine, and Best Day of My Life.

Parking & Drop Off
Please note that parking is at a premium, particularly now that we have so many new families who joined us this fall. If you are arriving early and waiting with your child in your car, please consider parking along the street to ensure our staff can find parking when they arrive.
Entering Campus
If you are walking your child onto campus and plan to go past the big, black gate, you must sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor badge to be on campus. Remember to sign out when you leave as well. This helps us to account for everyone that is on campus.
Food Service News
We've gotten lots of feedback from students and families regarding some changes in food services. Here is some info from our Food Service Director Christina Lawson:
A. WPUSD has started offering chocolate milk on Fridays only. Our Food Service department is really focused on bringing in lots of fruits and vegetables this year and reducing down the occurrence of items with added sugar.
B. Want to help shape the future of WPUSD food service offerings? We are looking for teachers, parents, community members that are interested in being on some panels/focus groups regarding food service selections and branding over the next year. Please reach out to Christina Lawson at clawson@wpusd.org if interested.
C. We are lucky to be able to feature lots of CA grown produce that is seasonal and fresh. All our offerings are all CA Grown at the moment including our carrots, lettuce, plums, peaches, oranges, zucchini, strawberries to name a few!
