Focus on Access

Regional and Statewide Services for Students with Orthopedic Impairment (RSOI) and Oregon Technology Access Program (OTAP) are thrilled to announce the second annual AT-TIES Together Virtual Conference. This conference brings together Oregon's Therapists in Educational Settings (TIES) with Assistive Technology teams, administrators, teachers and families for three days of professional development. Sessions will highlight access across the lifespan, with a focus on inclusion and developing student choice and voice.

Embedded in those different response strategies are opportunities for improving outcomes; both for ourselves and for the children with whom we work.

Unprecedented Challenges Present Unprecedented Opportunities Which Require Unprecedented Action

Carla is a connector and solution builder who works to bring networks of people together from diverse backgrounds to strategize, innovate and learn. With over 20 years’ experience, her areas of expertise include education policy, classroom practice, professional learning and educational technology implementation.

The pandemic with all of its challenges has presented us with an incredible opportunity. We have a short timeline to grab this opportunity to impact the future of learning - an opportunity that we must not squander. What we do as leaders, educators, and policy makers to be ready for what comes will be our legacy. The futures of our children today, and those for decades to come, depend on the work we begin today.

We ask you to come to this conference prepared with ideas and openness. We need to leave our preconceived notions about the “right: way of doing things at the door as we problem solve these challenges and transform education for the future. Today we roll up sleeves to figure out what the future holds and work towards it.

Teaching, Technology, and Togetherness: Reflections on Maggie's K-12 school journey

My daughter, Maggie, leaves high school this June. This past year has been consumed with coping with the pandemic, supporting Maggie in remote learning, and planning for her transition into adult life. Maggie's transition planning has revealed the (sometimes surprising) aspects of her school experience that best prepared her for a good adult life. But it has also exposed the work that must continue into adulthood to maximize her independence.

This keynote will describe the lessons we've learned supporting one complex student over the complete K-12 school journey. I will introduce the person-centered planning tools that have guided our priorities and maximized peer involvement. We will reflect on how AT and AAC have created opportunities but also sometimes posed a barrier. Finally, we will consider the role of supported decision-making (using a variety of AT) in school planning. This keynote will inspire you with simple ideas about how all students can be supported to participate in their own planning and help set their own priorities, preparing them for a good adult life.
