Reading Reminder
Thank you for encouraging your student to be a life-long learner through continuous reading. Research has identified that "out-of-school reading habits of students have shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year." What a fantastic way to easily improve your child's academics in just a few minutes a day!
“To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.” - A C Grayling, Financial Times (in a review of A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel)
Lessons about LSTW
Georgia Lighthouse Schools to Watch are a program of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform. Georgia Lighthouse Schools to Watch seeks to identify high-performing middle grades schools, like Coastal Middle School. Georgia was one of the first three states in the nation to qualify to be part of the prestigious National Forum Schools to Watch® program. Schools across the country that are committed to a journey of excellence are identified based on their levels of implementation of the 4 domains of the program:
Academic Excellence – High-performing schools with middle grades are academically excellent. They challenge all students to use their minds well.
Developmental Responsiveness – High-performing schools with middle grades are sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescence.
Social Equity – High-performing schools with middle grades are socially equitable, democratic, and fair. They provide every student with high-quality teachers, resources, learning opportunities, and supports. They keep positive options open for all students.
Organizational Structures and Processes – High-performing schools with middle grades are learning organizations that establish norms, structures, and organizational arrangements to support and sustain their trajectory toward excellence.
At this time Georgia has only 18 schools in the program. These schools serve as models and mentors for other schools in the state while, at the same time, continuing their own journey of excellence. Lighthouse Schools to Watch must re-apply every three years to demonstrate their continued growth and to remain in the program. Thank you for sending us such wonderful students that our light shines in the community, district, state and nation!

The Princess Ball, sponsored by Helping Hands of Savannah will be held on Saturday, February 25th at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. The ball will start at approximately 6 pm and end with 8:45p.m.being the last pick up. Each princess will need to find transportation to and from the dance. The drop off location for the princesses is next door at the Holiday Inn. (520 W. Bryan Street) The reason we're requesting the princesses to be dropped off next door at the hotel is because this is where they'll meet their escort. The escort will then greet their "daughter" with a tiara and corsage. At the end of the evening, the parent or guardian will need to pick up their daughter at the venue, which is located at 41 MLK BLVD; parking is located on Orange Street, the side entrance to the venue. This will also enable the mothers and/or guardians to take pictures. Each parent/guardian will not be allowed to pick up daughter/princess without the correct wrist band; wrist bands will have matching numbers. Each one of our "stand in" escorts is one of the following: police, fireman, paramedics/EMS or military, each with approved background checks. We are able to provide an age appropriate dress for any of the princesses that don't have a dress. Please pass along, that we're having a "pick your dress" day, this Sunday, February 12, from 3pm to 6 pm at the Holiday Inn, 520 West Bryan Street. (912-656-8808- call me, Courtney for any questions) There is NO CHARGE for this event. Mothers/guardians are not requested to attend the dance. (Daddy/daughter only) The first 150 girls will ONLY be permitted. (The venue only holds a certain amount) To have your daughter attend, please reply to the following email: SavannahPrincessBall@gmail.com
