Miss Blanshine's Class News

March 2015

March-ing right through to the third trimester!

Dear Parents / Guardians,

As the second trimester comes to a close, I am amazed at the progress I am seeing students making! Just a reminder that PSSA testing is coming up quickly! We will be spending time over the next few weeks preparing and honing our testing skills. This year, the 6th graders will be taking their PSSA test online. Never fear! Our 6th graders are tech saavy and ready to take on this new way of doing the test! They will have an opportunity to see what the test looks like and practice.

Just a few reminders:

- Please be sure that your child is fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

- Please send in a note when your child returns from being absent. This is very helpful for Mrs. Hurst to have it as soon as possible.

- Be sure to register for a parent portal account. If you do not have an account or experience problems logging in, contact Annette_Stewart@conestogavalley.org for assistance.

What have we been reading?

We are entering the world of folktales with the story of Juan Verdades. Students are each reading a folktale of their choice and then we are comparing them to find commonalities. This makes the students the teachers! After this we will delve into book clubs for a short time leading up to PSSAs as well as working on some skill review to get ready for the tests in April. I have seen so much improvement in the students' essays and test-taking skills over the last month!

Social Studies

Throughout the month of March, we will continue our study of Latin America. We’ve been studying the ancient cultures, the exploration and colonization of the region by Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors, the struggle for independence, and more recent historical trends of the region. Next we will be studying the cultures of Latin America today. We will focus on a few countries of each region to get a taste of life in Latin America!

Last week we started chapter 9 which is coordinate geometry. The students will plot points in all four quadrants. Then they will connect the order pairs to identify the figure as well as determine its perimeter and area. We should be ready to test sometime next week. Look for a remind for the exact date. After chapter 9, we will start our unit of geometry. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Writing Class will focus on making sure we are able to analyze elements of author's craft in selected poetry and matching prose. We will also work to hone our ability to proof-read looking for errors in punctuation, word usage, and pronoun usage. Finally, we will rehearse writing timed 5 paragraph essays in preparation for the PSSA assessments.
