Shepard News & Notes
February 10, 2017
Hello Shepard Families:
If you drive your child to school, you may have noticed police presence during the morning drop-off last week. Due to a number of complaints from parents and local residents, the police conducted a review of our drop off procedures. Their review affirmed our past practices, but they did ask that I share with you two important reminders.
- Parents should only form one line of cars approaching the Shepard Middle School property. Parents should not "hop the line" by traveling through the northbound lane of Grove. Staff and busses are permitted to do so in order to access the property, but parents are to remain in one cue.
- Parents dropping students off should pull as far forward as possible before dropping off their student.
Please take a moment to review the traffic "do's and don'ts" noted in my post below; and, thank you for following the rules to ensure safety and efficiency!
Warm Regards,
John
1st Posting - Traffic Reminders
We take great pride in ensuring safe and efficient drop off and pick up procedures! Please view the attached aerial map for a visual of drop off procedures. Remember that traffic in and out of Shepard moves one direction. You will approach Shepard moving south in a single file line on Grove Avenue and exit to the east on Poplar Lane. Do not park and exit your car while on Grove, in front of the school, or on Poplar. If you must exit your vehicle, you need to park in the main lot--the Buildings & Grounds lot is not open to parents.
During pick up, please be kind to our neighbors. Do not park in front of driveways and refrain from making 3-point turns in the street or in our neighbors driveways to head north on Grove. Not only do our neighbors frequently complain about their driveways being used for this purpose, this presents a safety risk to our students.
Please respect all traffic signs and stay off your cell phone. You will see your building administrators out and about in yellow vests welcoming students and directing traffic. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask. Bottom line - obey the rules, be patient, and keep moving!
1st Posting - Cradles & Crayons Fundraiser - Spring Cleaning!
Cradles to Crayons, a unique Chicago based organization provides children ages 1 -12 who are living in homeless or low-income situations, with essential items for children in need. Every 1 in 4 children under age 5 lives in poverty -- more than 197,000 of those children call Chicago home -- and each deserves a warm coat, a backpack for school, or a new toy to call their own.
The following list of new or gently used items to help these children:
1. Clothing, shoes, coats (underwear and socks are the most needed items).
2. Children's toys or books
