Solar Eclipse Reminder:
Dear Families:
Just a friendly reminder that Monday, April 8, is "Eclipse Day"! All students at HES will be given glasses and will view the eclipse outside. Please send your student to school with a towel or small blanket, so he/she can sit on the grass to observe everything. We will be outside for at least one hour and the grass can get scratchy/itchy.
Music Program Information:
Hello Horizon Kindergarten and 1st Grade families!
I am so excited to give you details on our Kindergarten and 1st Grade Music Program coming up on May 2nd! With the date quickly approaching, please make sure you are updated with the following details
Our program will take place at 6 pm that evening, and will be located in the Smithville Performing Arts Center. Students will have a few opportunities to rehearse together before the performance, so they will not need to arrive until 5:50 pm that evening! Teachers will be there to help guide students to their spots on stage, while audience members take a seat.
Our program theme is “Squirm!”, a musical about bugs and different animals! I like to stick with color schemes for student performances, to avoid anyone having to buy an entire outfit! This year to match our theme the color scheme will be earthy tones (tans, blues, greens, etc.) When helping your child select their outfit, please keep in mind this is a stage performance for students to show all of their hard work!
May will be here before we know it! I am so excited for you to see all of the amazing work these kids are doing in music class. Please mark your calendars and thank you for all that you do to help support these amazing kids!
Reader's Workshop:
Last week in reader's workshop we worked on identifying sensory words (adjectives) in poetry. We also explored rhyming in poetry. This week we will learn about alliteration (tongue twisters). We will also begin our reader's theaters parts this week!
Writer's Workshop:
Last week we worked on finishing up our publishing for our N.F. animal writing pieces. We added a Table of Contents, About the Author pages, and a Front Cover. This week we will begin our poetry unit and start our Cinquain Poems.
Math:
Last week in math we work on telling time to the hour and half hour. We took a quiz on this at the end of the week, those went home in Friday folders. This week we will be working on adding/subtracting a ten from a two-digit number. For example: 34+20 or 22-10.
Telling time with partners!
Science:
Last week we continued working on animal superpowers. We learned that baby animals look like their parents, how animals stay safe, and animal actions (why do animals do what they do). This week we will begin learning about plant powers!
