Locust Fork High School's Required Summer Reading
Summer Reading Philosophy
The Language Arts Department at Locust Fork High School believes reading enriches a student’s academic experience and greatly rewards future endeavors. Reading over the summer not only strengthens previous learning, but lays the groundwork for the next school year. Summer reading programs support students in the following ways:
Previews themes and motifs of upcoming courses
Enhances critical thinking and provides enrichment opportunities
Commonality of texts promotes student to student discussion
Introduces an array of genres
Encourages them to read for enjoyment
Combats the loss of reading achievement over the summer
Summer Library Hours
Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
- June 7, 8, 12, 16, 21, 22, 28, and 29
- July 6, 19, 29, 26, and 27
Library copies are available on a first come, first serve basis. Many of them are on loan from the Blount County Resource Center. Lost copies from the Resource Center will cost $16.00 to replace.

7th Grade Required Reading
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen:
After a plane crash, thirteen-year-old Brian spends fifty-four days in the wilderness, learning to survive initially with only the aid of a hatchet given by his mother, and learning also to survive his parents' divorce.

8th Grade Required Reading
Phillip Enright, and the ship's cat are castaways on a barren Caribbean island after their ship is torpedoed during World War II. The book describes the struggle for survival.

9th Grade Required Reading
Andrew "Ender" Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. The result of genetic experimentation, Ender may be the military genius Earth desperately needs in a war against an alien enemy seeking to destroy all human life. The only way to find out is to throw Ender into ever harsher training, to chip away and find the diamond inside, or destroy him utterly. Ender Wiggin is six years old when it begins. He will grow up fast.

10th Grade Required Reading
Guy Montag, a fire-fighter and book-burner for the State, discovers that in order to remain human he must preserve the books that attest to his humanity in this classic novel.

This haunting, harrowing, gloriously moving recollection of a life on the American margin is the story of Rick Bragg, who grew up dirt-poor in northeastern Alabama, seemingly destined for either the cotton mills or the penitentiary, and instead became a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times.
