K-12 HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE STANDARDS OF LEARNING INSTITUTES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES
Last month, the Virginia Department of Education provided targeted professional development through a series of eight K-12 History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) Institutes. These Institutes focused on the increased rigor and the history and social science skills emphasized in the 2015 History and Social Science Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework. Virginia Beach City Public Schools sent teacher representatives from elementary, middle and high school to attend. Each of the Institutes began with a general session where the changes in the 2015 History and Social Science Standards of Learning were highlighted. Educators attended an interactive session presented by the Library of Congress that focused on Teaching with Primary Sources. Concurrent course content sessions, facilitated by regional teachers, deepened the discussions of the new standards and curriculum framework, progression of skills and experiences to use in history and social science skills instruction.
Supporting professional development resources, including PowerPoint presentations associated with each K-12 History and Social Science SOL Institute, are available online on the History and Social Science Standards of Learning Institute's webpage. Teachers and support staff are encouraged to utilize the professional development resources to improve student achievement through quality instruction.
Questions may be directed to Katie Niehoff, elementary social studies coordinator, at Kathleen.Niehoff@vbschools.com or 263-1020.
An Attitude of Gratitude Rocks!
~Many thanks to our ILT - you prepared perfectly for our site visit with Mr. Walker, Mrs. Drosinos, and Mr. Barrett. LAM
~Kudos to Brooke, Jan, Hannah, Catie, & Karen for their presentations during the SIP meeting. You did an outstanding job presenting an overview of the many facets of what makes Trantwood a great place to learn, work and grow. I know you were nervous, but really, you did a great job! LAM
~Second Grade, thank you for welcoming the SIP team to your classrooms. The team was very complimentary of what they saw - evidence of grade level planning, evidence of schoolwide expectations, and small group instruction. Wow - so impressed! LAM
~Megan & Melissa, SCA Parents Night Out was a blast! Thank you for planning so many fun activities. The time together with 85 of our closest school friends went really fast! LAM
~My highest compliments to Karen L., Joyce M, Berkely, and Courtney G., for their persistence to be kind and professional during a difficult parent conversation. LAM
~Kudos to everyone for being persistently consistent when dealing with students. Your consistency makes all the difference whether our students are doing what is expected or not. LAM
~Way to go SRT team! Your presentation was very helpful on Tuesday and provided many helpful resources to refer to when trying to identify additional strategies! LAM
~Teacher of the Year team, super job celebrating this year's TOY. The cake was yummy, the student responses to Mrs. Bailey sweet, and the staff camaraderie the absolute best! LAM
Congratulations Angela Haebler, Teacher Assistant of the Year!
