Family Engagement at GW
Family engagement in schools is defined as parents and school personnel working together at the classroom, local, and system level to support and improve the learning, development, and health of children and adolescents. The very neat thing about schools and families is that we all have the child's best interest in mind. We want nothing but the best and to help them succeed in school and in life. Schools have many policies, procedures, and laws that must be upheld to provide equity and access to a free public education for all students. These days, there is more of an expectation in education and teaching the whole child than there has been previously. Schools continue to teach reading, writing, math, science, and social studies but have also added more learning in technology, social skills, and emotional learning.
This year, we will begin a Parent Advisory Team (PAT) at GW. The purpose of this group is to allow parents/families and the school to come together in a meaningful way to support one another and our endeavor in teaching the whole child. I often hear parents who feel as if they have a difficult time connecting to one another or just wanting to have a support group with other parents. Raising kids is hard these days and they certainly do not come with instructions. Our first PAT meeting will be on October 12 at 5:00 in the GW gym. Our focus will be to examine the Five Love Languages for Children and how we can apply that to the adult-child relationship. Light refreshments will be served. I hope you will attend and bring a friend!

Mrs. Davis

From the desk of Mr. Coovert
In the month of October students will be learning the basics of the brain and how to keep themselves from flipping their lid (losing control of their emotions). The video that will be shown to students during this month is found at this link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bKuoH8CkFc
The video makes a very clear and easy to understand explanation of the brain for students and what happens when our emotions get to strong and we flip our lids. Feel free to watch the video with your child and have a discussion afterwards.
If you have any questions, concerns, or need support for your student in anyway do not hesitate to reach out. You can reach me by phone or email.
Thank you,
Mr. Coovert
