Invitational Summer Institute: Enhancing Writing Instruction for K-16 Teachers
You are invited to apply for the Upper Cumberland Writing Project's 2016 Invitational Summer Institute.
As a professional development network, the UCWP works to support and improve writing instruction across subjects and at all grade levels. The professional development model established by the National Writing Project celebrates superior teaching and exemplary teachers and values effective strategies in all classrooms. As an NWP site, the UCWP recognizes the expertise of successful classroom teachers, and we provide opportunities for these teachers to teach other teachers.
The 2016 Invitational Summer Institute (ISI) provides selected teachers with intensive, sustained time to discuss and enhance the ways they use writing in their classrooms, to deepen their teaching philosophies, and to build a community of teachers interested in writing. Upon completion of the Summer Institute, ISI Fellows become UCWP Teacher Consultants who facilitate professional development and community outreach programs throughout our region.
What does the Invitational Summer Institute offer?
The UCWP’s two-week Summer Institute offers participants an opportunity to learn about and discuss ideas related to teaching writing and using writing to teach—plus time to write. Common readings distributed during the Institute will be selected to meet the needs and interests of all participants. Teachers will share best teaching practices through hands-on teaching demonstrations and explore ideas and strategies through writing.
A typical day during the workshop features focused discussion of a reading and relevant strategies, time for writing reflectively and critically, constructive writing feedback from peers, an expert teacher's demonstration of effective strategies for using writing, and rich discussion of how to integrate and customize strategies for subject areas and across grade levels. The conclusion of the ISI features a festive celebration of writing. Participants will receive relevant materials and a $400 stipend. ISI is funded by a grant from the National Writing Project.
