CLEVELAND SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR UPDATES & REMINDERS
Week of April 10 - 14, 2023
A note from the Head of School
Welcome to a new week at CSA,
We have officially arrived at testing season. This week kicks off several weeks of high-stakes tests beginning with the OST. Scholars will take the English Language Arts Test on Tuesday. We are not strangers to state testing but I do want to remind all families of its importance. The results of state testing affect our school report card rating, your scholar's college acceptance, and even their graduation status. Having a good nighttime and morning time routing prior to testing can be the difference between an accelerated score or just being proficient.
Testing Window:
- April 11 - 28: ELA TESTING
- April 24 - May 12: Math, Science, Social Studies TESTING
3Qtr. Report Cards: If you did not receive your scholar's report card from the 3rd Quarter, please call the school's main office. As a best practice, we highly encourage families to routinely review your scholar's Schoology grades and reach out directly to teachers with any questions.
Attendance: As a school, we have fallen behind our goal of 45% chronic absenteeism. We currently sit at 47.2%. There is still time to finish strong. Good school attendance has a direct positive correlation with student achievement. For more school attendance data please see the graphic below.
April Family Meeting: This month will be a Senior Parent Meeting. All are welcome to join however the topic of conversation will be geared toward to end of year senior events. The meeting will take place on April 17th at 8:00 PM via Zoom. A link will be shared closer to the meeting date. May's family meeting will be for Junior families an the topic of discussion will be, "Am I ready for my scholar to graduate?"

Mrs. Porter's BHM Chairs,
This exhibit was the result of our study of Shirley Chisholm, a Congresswoman who was not willing to sit on the sidelines of government. The exhibit shares how Congresswoman Chisholm stepped up, claimed her seat at the table of public discourse, and made a difference by representing a wide range of people and issues. Our class created our own “seats at the table” concerning important issues where we would like our voices to be heard.
Student's thoughts about the project...
“MY favorite part of the project was getting to put together multiple perspectives and form them into one to make the design of our chair. “ Chloe Sigler
“My favorite part of this project was seeing all of the different art majors and other majors come together and create a piece of meaningful art. We took the chance to dive in and take a deep look at history. ”
- Aysia Walker
“The message I presented was Black Lives Matter because it is important to know that black people have been treated poorly for years and it needs to stop. My favorite part of this project was using the hot glue gun. I learned that not everyone has to believe in you for you to achieve your goal if you really want it. I thought this was a fun, messy project.”
- King Lavender
“The message we presented was that black lives matter, and we need to find peace. I thought our best part was the African American heritage flag that we drew and placed on the chair. I learned that Shirley’s “Unbought and unbossed” statement lives strong today.”
- Reginae Talton
“My group wanted people to know that Shirley was very passionate about what she believed in. She wanted change and the world and fought for it. May favorite part was putting our ideas together on the chairs and seeing the results.”
- Mariya McMillon
“We presented Shirley’s overall life. From her greatest achievements down to her many obstacles. I enjoyed assembling the chair. I’m not a great with words or writing overall and am better at showing ideas through imagery and this project let me do that.”
- Lennon Peterson
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Cleveland Institute of Art student Derek Walker discovers his voice as a painter
Some of Derek Walker’s earliest memories include learning how to draw from his father and cousin. Walker loved to draw cars, particularly Lamborghinis, as a boy.
Today the Cleveland of Institute of Art senior is establishing his voice as an artist in Cleveland with his paintings featuring hometown images and iconography.
Walker is a graduate of the Cleveland School of the Arts and received a unique opportunity when the school moved into its new building.
“My class of students were one of the first students to actually enroll into the building, because it was newly built and they wanted to make the school a bit more welcoming to the students,” Walker said. “So, they invited several artists of the school to create murals on all of the blank walls.”
