Mrs. Kincer's Happy Campers
Read Across America Week
What an incredible week we had - from Monday's Pajama Day to Silly Sock Day to Doctors at Lunch to Flashlight Friday, there was something fun going on each day to celebrate reading. Thanks to everyone who made this week feel special throughout our building!
LEPRECHAUN POW
HEADPHONES
For next week's IREAD (and again for ILEARN in April/May), students MUST have properly functioning earbuds or headphones. Please ask your child if they need ones that work so we are not caught off guard come Monday morning. Thank you!
KINDNESS CHALLENGE
This week's school-wide kindness challenge is to write a note or letter thanking our principal or our office staff for all they do to make Ireland Elementary such a fantastic place to learn. Ask your child to think of one or two things they have loved doing this year to include in a note for Mrs. Bauer, or make a card for Abby or Toni thanking them for all they do.
NOTES FOR THIS WEEK
MATH
In class, we're working on fractions. Our standards for fractions include:
- recognizing/naming fractions of a whole or of a group
- naming fractions on a number line (we work naming the fractional parts up to whole numbers 3-4 - so 1.5 in 6ths is 9/6 on a number line rather than a mixed number with part a fraction and part a whole number)
- identifying equivalent fractions, both with and without using a model or number line
- generating equivalent fractions
- comparing fractions with the same numerator(for example, 2/5 >2/8, and 2/5 < 2/3; both with and without using models, number lines, etc.)
- comparing fractions with the same denominator (for example, 1/8 <2/8, and 7/8 > 3/8)
Keep practicing those facts - we've had quite a few students move on to their 100-fact timed test! In March, all "little" timed tests (specific facts, doubles, mixed with only 20 problems) will continue to be done at recess. We've been working on these for more than five months now and feel that most students have had sufficient time to master these individual fact families.
We're learning about energy - mechanical energy, sound energy, heat energy, and electrical energy. We''re having a test on Friday, March 13th.
- Your child should be reading 15-20 minutes every night. Thanks for helping us to build our reading stamina!
- We have about a week left to meet our AR goals!
- Be sure to ask what your child is reading in small groups, too.
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
This is Unit 5 Week 2 and a new newsletter came home on Friday for you. We're working on pronouns in grammar, adding suffixes in spelling and vocabulary, and cause/effect and author's POV in reading.GENERAL NOTES
- Please sign the assignment notebook nightly. Asking to see your child's homework will go a long way toward helping make a stronger home-school connection.
- We love having a healthy snack for our mid-morning break. We also appreciate students having a water bottle at school - this helps keep them hydrated throughout the day.
- Our morning breakfast program continues to be very popular! Please remember that students who are dropped off in the car line should arrive by 7:40 if they plan to eat before the bell rings at 7:50.
