THE APRIL PIONEER PRESS
Croswell Lexington Middle School - April 2023
ALERT: CALENDAR CHANGE
Principal's Message
Pioneer Families,
I hope that you were able to enjoy a restful Spring Break. We are geared up and ready to tackle the home stretch. There are just 45 days of instruction left in the 22-23 school year, and there is much to be done.
Upon our return from break we will be heading straight into many of our mandated assessments (PSAT 8/9, M-Step, NWEA). This can feel like an overwhelming time for students and staff. Nonetheless, these assessments are important, and do have implications on a number of student and district level outcomes. Please encourage your child(ren) to do their very best. You can help them by ensuring that they are getting eight hours of sleep, eating well, and taking some time to be active. The best way to do all of those things is to limit screen time for them.
ATTENTION 8th Grade PARENTS - It is VITAL that your child is in on time and in attendance in April. While this is always essential, I really want to drive it home at this time of year. On the days leading up to the test, students will be filling out important documents for test day. Students who are not in attendance will have to make up the test under less convenient circumstances. Students who are late on testing day will have to take make up tests, they can not start the test late. So, late students will be housed in an alternate location and have to make up the test. Please, Please, Please have them here and ready to go.
We coined this past month, "Motivation March". Throughout the month we certainly had students show how motivated and dedicated they all were. Early in the month we were able to host the "Music Man Jr." production. The students put on three fantastic shows for our community. Big thanks to director Sue Kinsley and all of her support staff for their efforts, and a hearty congratulations to our students for a job well done.
The band program overcame some bouts of weather related adversity to showcase their talents at their band festival. They always do a wonderful job and represented us very well. Mr. Czarnik is also looking for the next crop of beginning band students for 23-24. If your student is in 5th grade, and would like to join the ranks of our elite band program, please be sure to have your student sign up.
Some other happenings during this month were....5th Grade Activity Day (for winning Penny wars), the Book Fair, Conferences, Staff "Who's Who?" contest, PBIS Reward Day, and Students vs Staff Basketball Game. It was a busy month, but we had a lot of fun!
Looking ahead, we are looking forward to a number of opportunities and events this spring. We will offer tutoring on most Mondays and Wednesdays, Spring Sports, Field Trips, and Awards Nights. Please keep up with the school announcements page to make sure your calendar is up-to-date.
Shifting gears; something that we are still working to address with our students across the district is the need to be mindful of the things that we say and do online. We continue to see instances where students end up being disciplined or investigated for inappropriate or even threatening language in posts. While it does not usually mean that there is a threat to student safety, we'll always have to follow protocol regarding disciplining these items. Having a child tell us that they were "joking" does not excuse them. Please discuss this with your child, and monitor their activity on their devices.
I very much appreciate how invested the community has been in making this school year fantastic. I am looking forward to a successful spring full of sunshine and opportunity!

Absences that are called in by a parent/guardian are considered excused absences but would still count toward the overall number of absences for the semester.
Absences that are supported by a doctor's note, or court-related absences will not count toward the overall number of absences for the semester. This documentation should be provided to the office within 48 hours of the absence.
OFFICE VISITORS - We aim to be a supportive place for our families to interact with. We will be phasing out the use of the drop off window beginning October 10th. So, if you are heading to the school to drop something off, you'll need to be buzzed in and deliver things to office personnel that way. Having said that, please assist us by helping your child prepare for school each day so that we keep visits/traffic reserved for those urgent, and elevated needs. We also may be able to save you a trip if you call first, and seek out important information that we can offer you digitally.
CHARTWELLS FOOD SERVICE - Breakfast is FREE for all students for the 2022-2023 school year. If a student wishes to have breakfast, they must eat prior to the 8AM bell. Lunch is back to the traditionally purchase lunch program. Student meals for 2022-23 are $2.75. If you qualify for free/reduced lunch, please fill out the linked form.
SKYWARD/BRIGHTSPACE - Please be sure to check your student's skyward and brightspace often. This is one of the best ways that they school will communicate with you about grades/progress. We will always do our best to reach out in additional ways, but parents should check these items daily to promote academic well being. We are partners with you in tracking your student's progress. Many teachers will update grades daily, but at a minimum you can find accurate and updated grades every Monday by 12pm

Social Emotional Learning
CLMS Families,
We are excited to begin incorporating some Social Emotional Learning opportunities through Navigate360. I have linked their resource page here for you so that you can explore what it is all about. I will also let you know when I have loaded our lessons to students or what the topic will be, so that you can review it prior to the day of facilitation. At this time I have opened lessons for the month of December. You may access the exact lesson through your child's account and review them if you would like to.
Research has shown that there is an identified need for students to explicitly practice how to build positive and healthy relationships with one another. These programs will be one of the ways that we can help students to identify and regulate their emotions, and create a more fulfilling school and life experience. The overall objective? Whole child development.
The topics that we'll be going over this year at CLMS are linked HERE
From my perspective as a parent and as and educator I truly believe in the importance of whole child education through SEL pathways. In my purview these facilitated conversations and reflections should model fundamental norms and values that exist in our community. I want all parents to know that we are always going to be committed to decency, respect, and wellness for all of our stakeholders.
