Chemistry-8.P.1-Understand the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open and closed container.

Physical Properties-Can be observed or measured with out changing it.(Ex:odor, mass, density, volume, color, and state)

Chemical properties-They can only be observed during a chemical reaction.(Ex:Flammability and re-activity)

Physical change- Does not form a new substance.(Ex:Melting ice or freezing ice)

Chemical change- One or more substances are change into new substances that have new and different properties.(Ex:A new color appears)

Elements- Made of one type of atom cannot be separated into simpler substance by located on the periodic table. (Ex: Copper, aluminum)

Compound- Are made of 2 or more atoms of different element that are bond together.(Ex:water, carbon dioxide, magnesium oxide, and sodium chloride)

Mixtures- Combination of 2 or more pure substances that are held together by physical forces, not chemical.(Ex:Air, sea water, and most rocks)

Periodic Table- The periodic table is a list of all the known elements and its organized by increasing atomic numbers. There are two main groups on the periodic table metals and nonmetals. There are 18 groups and 7 periods.

The left side of the table contains elements with the greatest metallic properties and as you go yo the right to the table the elements become lees metallic. The far right of the table consisting of nonmetals and in the middle of the table are transition element. Why because they are changed from metallic properties to nonmetallic. The members who touch the zigzag line are called metalloids because they have both metallic and nonmetallic properties.

The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of an element. The atomic mass is a given atom or molecule, expressed in atomic mass units compare to atomic wight.Protons and neutrons and both inside the nucleus and electrons are out side the nucleus.

Law of conservation of mass- That the atoms of an object cannot be created or destroyed, but can be moved around and be changed into different particles.

Vocabulary

solution-A substance made as a result of moving a solid and a liquid and the solid dissolves.(Ex: kool-aid, salt water, and syrup

Atom-The basic building block for all matter. (Ex: hydrogen, neon, oxygen, and gold)

Matter-Anything that has mass and takes up place. (Ex:solids, bricks, steel, wood, and liquid)

Earth History

Law of superposition-Younger rocks lie above older rocks if the layers have not been disturbed.

Index Fossils -A fossil that is useful for dating and correlating that strata in which it is found.(Ex: dinosaur fossil)
