A Message from Our Principal
Thankful for Children and Homework?
A colleague recently shared a research article with me titled “Don’t Help Your Kids With Their Homework.” The title caught my eye both as someone in professional education, and as a parent of two children who are now twenty-eight and twenty-five.
I recall countless evenings of helping my kids review their work, often times wondering ‘what is the point.’ It was often very challenging for me to ‘just do it’ and move things along for them, even though I knew better. I knew that the struggle was as important as the content being taught. I knew from my formal teacher training that children learn as much, if not more, from struggling with concepts and being challenged, as they do by being given the ‘correct’ answer. Nonetheless, the temptation to jump in and ‘rescue’ my children was great. One strategy that seemed to help me find common ground in my own mind was to get my kids to step back a bit and ask questions about their homework. Such as: What didn’t they know and what did they know about the problem? Why they thought the concept was being taught? What if I just did their work for them, what would really happen in their lives? To my surprise, teachers shared with me that my children sometimes also asked similar questions of the teachers in class. This led to interesting conversations, and more often than not, they completed their homework themselves and earned their own grades.
Based on my experience, I believe children need the love and understanding of parents to support them throughout life. The article referenced above, shared findings that indicate that one powerful type of parental involvement is when parents go to great lengths to seek out effective schools for their children, while others accept the status quo at the school around the corner. I know that RHLS parents have gone to great lengths to seek out RHLS as a school of choice for their child, this is a choice and form of parental involvement that will have lasting effects, eternally lasting effects.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I am thankful for children and their homework. Thankful to have the opportunity to be challenged by both children and their homework. More so, thankful for a community of Christian believers here at Red Hill Lutheran Church and School who together form a foundation of support and encouragement to live for Christ each and every day. Thankful for 60 years of Engaging Hearts and Minds for Christ here at RHLS, and praying for 60 more!
Blessings,
Dr. Paul Marquardt, Principal
A Message from Our Pastor
Dear Red Hill Lutheran School Families,
God’s Word reminds us that…
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…” (Hebrews 12.1)
According to the ancient, Christian calendar, Monday, November 1st is All Saints Day. All Saints Day dates back to approximately 610 A.D. when the Pantheon in Greece, turned into a Christian Church, was dedicated to all saints. The 1662 Book of Common Prayer describes that this Christian holy-day (holiday) calls us to gratefully remember those who have died in the Christian faith and “the unity of Christians of all ages, countries, and races in Christ, and the perfection of that unity in heaven.” Every follower of Christ is a member of God’s family, a family that transcends time and space; a spiritual family that is current and ancient. All Saints Day is an annual reminder of this incredible truth.
Who is a saint? Every believer in Christ! In Ephesians 1.1, Saint Paul opens his letter to the church in Ephesus this way:
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The word “saint” comes from the Greek word hagios, which means “consecrated to God, holy.” As the Ephesians text above illustrates, typically, this word is plural, i.e. “saints,” referring to the church. The Bible says that, by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ’s finished work alone, God’s people are forgiven and reconciled to God. Incredibly, God’s people are also clothed in the righteousness of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5.21). Consequently, saints are set apart (consecrated) to serve God now and in heaven.

Parenting Classes: Preschool-1st Grade
MINDFULNESS & SELF-REGULATION
RHL Preschool is happy to announce that we are offering three parenting classes to our preschool, kindergarten, and 1st grade families. The classes will focus on the subject area of mindfulness and self-regulation skills. The classes are designed for parents to learn age-appropriate techniques to help with difficult transitions, meltdowns, and/or when children experience excitement or frustration with certain situations. These are all taught with fun exercises to promote positive play and interaction between parents and children.
November 2nd
Class 1: Introduction to Mindfulness and Self-Regulation - What is mindfulness, and how can it help my child? How does mindfulness help children reach developmental milestones? How does instilling mindfulness and self-regulation skills relate to academic success?
November 9th
Class 2: Building a Mindful Home- This class will equip parents with activities and exercises to build mindfulness and self-regulation skills in their children. These techniques can be used at home for difficult transition times, bedtime, and other times when a child is excited or frustrated with a situation inside or outside of the home.
November 30th
Class 3: Speaking Mindfulness- Have you ever been lost for words or just frustrated with a melting down child? This class will instill in you a mindfulness vocabulary to teach to your child in these difficult situations. We will teach you how to calmly breathe with your child (yes, even in a public place!) and to deepen your understanding of what they need to achieve self-regulation. By building this vocabulary with your child, you will increase his or her understanding of their emotions in different situations.
Zoom Classes
Dates: Nov. 2nd, 9th, and 30th
Time: 7:00pm-8:15pm
There will be 45 minutes of class followed by an optional round table discussion.

NOV 14 HANNAH PRAYS FOR A BABY
NOV 21: GOD CALLS SAMUEL
NOV 28: GOD PROMISES A SAVIOR
OVERVIEW:
Kids love to be in the kitchen. They may even love helping prepare something delicious! Having a plan or a recipe usually helps, too. Just like having a plan in the kitchen helps us prepare the meal we hope to enjoy, the stories of the Old Testament prophets are like a cookbook that helped people prepare for the Savior that God would send one day. As we prepare our hearts for Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Advent Season later in the month, we will explore what it means to (1) trust and not worry, (2) talk to God, (3) listen to God and (4) leave the results up to God. All Preschool-5th Grade kids are invited to join us Sunday mornings at 9:15am in the K.I.D.S. Zone!

NOVEMBER TEACHING SERIES: WITH YOU
Being a good friend is easy! As long as you make time to hang out, remember their birthday and answer their texts, you’re eligible for the Great Friend Award… right? Friendship might feel easy when life is easy, but it gets more complicated when your friends are hurting or struggling. What should you do? What should you say? What should you not say? When our friends need help, there are no easy answers, but in this 4-week series, we’ll follow the lead of a few people who’ve been there. Through the stories of Job, Ruth, Naomi, Elijah, and Eli, we’ll see how God invites us to “be with” people when they’re grieving, lonely, in need, or feeling hopeless, and how God is already with them.
Look for our upcoming events on our YFM Website!
