Graphic Design Makes Board Games
Graphic Design students recently created a custom made board game with character pieces, playing cards for the game, and instructions with the use both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Through the process, students were asked to think about incorporating multiple elements into a sophisticated, unified design and visualizing digital artwork in three dimensions.
Local TV Highlights high school CTE Programs
In mid-February, students in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at both Clemens and Steele high schools were profiled by News 4 WOAI News . The interview highlighted how students in high school can receive not only credit needed for graduation but also industry certifications in high-demand careers like medicine, welding, coding, and robotics. Check out the interview here - archived on their website. While the bulk of the interview focused on the medical program at Steele High School, students from the CTE program at Clemens were also featured.
Biology Samples Bacteria around Campus
Ms. Dufault’s AP Biology classes recently went around campus swabbing for bacteria. They were out to find which objects contained the most bacteria. Surprise: it wasn’t student cell phones. Rather, it was the keyboards in the computer labs, used by students over the course of the day—obviously with not always with the cleanest of hands.
In the Classroom & Around Campus
GOAL!!!!
Our Unified Sports Team held an intramural soccer game on February 21st in the cafeteria. Both our special needs and mainstream student body came together for a night of camaraderie and fun. Unified Sports will continue to host fun activities once a month. A huge thanks to Coach Tollison and Ms. Woods for promoting inclusion on our campus. All Means All!
Project LIT Community
Samuel Clemens’s new book club, Project LIT Community, is a part of a nationwide movement to get kids and school community members not only reading but also talking about what they’re reading—and with each other. The first book Clemens Project LIT Community will be reading is the The Children of Blood and Bone by first-time author Tomi Adeyemi. The next meeting of Project LIT Community to discuss the novel will be held on March 19th at 4:20 PM in the library.
Want to join the discussion? A limited number of copies are available for students in Ms. Merriner’s room, D205.
Vaping Information
In an effort to to address the increasing popularity of vaping, Clemens hosted a community presentation on February 7th to educate students, parents, and the community at large on the dangers of vaping.
The presentation was made by Clemens nurse Teresa Watson and Schertz police officer Martin Trevino. Slides from the presentation have been archived on the campus website.

Swimming Makes a Splash at State
Samuel Clemens sent its first swimmers to the UIL State Swimming & Diving Championships since 2013. The swimmers qualified in both individual and team/relay events from the highly-competitive Region VII-6A. Junior Conley Savage, for example, missed qualifying for the 200 individual medley (IM) by 0.13 seconds. Clemens’s first male diver, Joran Walker, earned an impressive tenth place.
For her individual event at state, senior Aubrey Mai raced her heart out in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing 19th in the state with a time of 24.38. Aubrey also qualified and swam on the girls’ 4x100-yard freestyle relay team with fellow senior Alyse Voos and sophomores Jessi Dziergowsk and Emily Bauer.
We are extremely proud of the aquatics program and how it’s grown since its inception in 2004. Congratulations to all swimmers, and Coach Cuda and Coach Bragg on developing Samuel Clemens Aquatics into a first-class swim team.
Wrestler Medals at State
Junior Jackson Macias placed 5th at the UIL State Championship. Jackson had a total of six hard-fought matches scoring four wins and two losses. His match for fifth place was against the same wrestler to whom he lost his first match, but Jackson came out ahead for their second encounter. Congratulations to Jackson on this awesome accomplishment! We are also beyond proud of sophomore Deshawn Cosby for qualifying to compete at the state tournament. A huge thanks to Coach Rogers and Coach Wallace for going above and beyond to prepare our Buffs!
