Teacher toolkit
Here is a sneak peak of what you're clicking on, thanks to MRS. FRANCO!
Having our students talk to one another is not just something that’s necessary for them to master the content in our classes. It’s also necessary for them to grow communication skills that technology has stunted. By now, we’re all experiencing many different classroom personalities. Some of them won’t talk to each other, and some of them won’t stop talking to each other. However, if we want to help our students grow, we need to make sure we’re including purposeful talk into our lesson plans. If you ask the teachers around you, I’m sure they’re willing to share how they get their students to engage with one another and stay on topic, but if you need a little extra help, consider the following:
· Think Time: If students immediately start talking and are off topic OR you ask them to start talking and no one does, they might need time to process what you’re asking them to talk about. Consider going over the discussion question or topic and tell them they have 30 seconds of silent thinking time before they begin talking to one another.
