Day #10 Agenda
Do you know what the idiom "stop and smell the roses" really means?
Plant Life: What is a Seed?
This week's reading passage, Plant Life: What is a Seed, is not on ReadWorks. Instead, it comes from another really good free reading site called Newsela. If you would like access to this site click here. Click on "It's My First Time Here." Next, choose "Join" (in the upper right hand corner). You will then be asked if you are joining a teacher's class. Choose "YES." and then "I am a student." Next, you will be asked to enter our class code (by the little key). It is:
RDT2G8
Since we do not yet have student e-mail accounts, you will need to have a parent help you fill in the bottom portion "Enter the information in the fields below." When asked to create a user name and a password , it might just be easier on you to make it the same as your ixl username and password abc123 . This will be a good site for you to visit during the summer to keep your reading skills up to snuff.
Of course, you may still simply read a paper copy of the passage by clicking on the above "Newsela Plants" download.
Below, you will find the first of a video series of our study of the life cycle of plants. There is also an optional life cycle graphic organizer for you to fill out.
Math: Partitioning Rectangles
"Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size (unit) squares
and count to find the total number of same-size squares."
You may click on the lesson below for a quick review of this, if needed. Also below you will find the download for the OPTIONAL daily math review.
Scholastic News: Butterflies Are Back!
After reading the news magazine, go to the "Extend the lesson" activities and choose the video The Life of a Butterfly" Next, learn more information about vocabulary from the article. Just for fun you might wish to play the "Fly Butterfly!" game. An optional "Reading a Diagram" printable is also included on the site.
Bizzy Mizz Lizzy
There is even a song by the same name, "Stop and Smell the Roses," by Mac Davis. It was a hit song when I was about your age. Give it a listen after the story.
Plant Pollinator Friendly Flowers
Union County Soil and Water Conservation has flower seed packs for you and your family.
Have your parents send your contact information to the Pollinator Project on the UCSWC by clicking here. You will receive enough seed to plant several flower pots or a 3’ square area in your garden (9' square if you get all three choices). The seeds are native to the US (no invasive plants) and will make blooms for you and help beneficial pollinating insects and hummingbirds. If you have to stay at home, why not make your home better for you and the environment? The picture above shows you what is included in the packet. They are also sponsoring a contest on the Best Designed Marker and/or photo contest for the Best Grown Wildflowers.
OPTIONAL: Mystery Science
Click the blue words then click the link for awesome Mystery Science Lessons with good old Mystery Doug. Gotta love him!
