Extension COVID-19 Response
Nebraska 4-H takes the health and safety of our community very seriously and we are carefully monitoring the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation.
Presently, we have made the decision to move to virtual methods or cancel all events scheduled for March 16-29. While this was an extremely difficult decision, we are putting the health and well-being of our staff/families/youth at the forefront. From March 30 - May 9, Nebraska 4-H programming will resume in a virtual format. This includes all scheduled educational programs, competitive events, and meetings hosted by Nebraska 4-H.
We thank you for your continued patience and support as we learn more from our public health officials and educational partners, and determine the best way to continue serving young people during this time. For updates on Nebraska 4-H and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s evolving position on COVID-19, please visit our website at covid19.unl.edu. We also encourage you to refer to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for the most current recommendations pertaining to health and personal risk factors.
We will communicate decisions about Nebraska 4-H state-level programs on this page and encourage you to visit your county webpages for up to date information on local programming. Please check back regularly as this is a developing situation and in the coming days, weeks, and months we will know more about the local implications of COVID-19.
As of this point in time all extension events:
- All Extension teaching events from March 16-29 are cancelled or we are working to offer them remotely.
- No in-person 4-H programming during this time. This includes school enrichment, competitive events, club meetings or events, etc.
- From March 30 – May 9, all Extension and 4-H programming will be taught remotely.
- No in-person 4-H programming during this time. This includes school enrichment, competitive events, clubs, etc.
- School enrichment programs have been cancelled or will be offered remotely if possible.
- All local contests and clinics (judging, speech, etc.) should be cancelled unless remote options are available.
- Saunders County Speech contest will continue, however it will all be virtual. We will release more details on that process later this week

the Friends of Saunders County 4-H and Extension Foundation would like to ask the clubs of Saunders County to help find a theme for this year’s auction. Please go to our Facebook page to put your suggestion into our poll. Last year’s theme was “Keep Saunders County Rolling”. With the use of items like tires and wheelbarrows, clubs made items for the auction in the past. Please submit suggestions to https://www.facebook.com/4hextensionfoundationofsaunderscounty/

2020 Online Horticulture Judging Contest
Beekeeping Essay Competition
Please have interested students submit state entries to the UNL Bee Lab (unlbeelab@unl.edu) with the subject header “4H Essay Contest” by March 1, 2020. This year’s topic is a bit challenging, especially if they are new to beekeeping, so if there are students who would like to interview or get in contact with a local beekeeper, they can reach out to the Nebraska Beekeepers Association (https://nebraskabeekeepers.org).
Questions? Contact Judy Wu-Smart, Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Entomology at UNL, at jwu-smart@unl.edu or at 402-472-8696.
