Week 19 Learning Targets
Language Arts- One of the most difficult concepts to master is connecting texts, which is exactly what our focus this week will be. We will be reading two texts by Eve Bunting and comparing and contrasting them. We will be analyzing everything from their setting and plot to themes and character relationships. Ultimately, the students will write an essay summing up their analysis. We will also be reading about the War of 1812 and our Superbowl Goals Quiz #2 will be about our reading. This will be a short, but impactful week of learning!
Math- We will be broadening our experience with the coordinate plane by graphing points that match real world data. Students will plot their findings and visually analyze the information they graph using ordered pairs. Our aim is to become expert at interpreting numerical relationships. We will also begin exploring strategies for division. It’s going to be awesome!
Science- This week we will continue our investigation on alternative energy through PBL (problem based learning) activities. Fifth graders will work with models of a hydroelectric water wheel (hydroelectric energy), wind turbine, (wind energy) solar car, (solar energy) and geyser (geothermal energy). Please continue the conversations about alternative energy with your child. Keep in mind that Stride Academy is a great resource tool your child can use to apply these, and other, concepts to science.
SCIENCE DONATIONS PLEASE! We are in need of 2L, clean, soda bottles for out ecosystem project that will begin in the next few weeks. I have been informed that the Dr. Pepper 2L bottles are the best because they have a flat bottom that is more stable.

PVE Writing Rubric Expectations
Parents, we would like to refresh your memory of the 2014/2015 PVE instructional focus. Across all curricular arenas we are directing our attention to writing. It is our expectation that every student will progress at least one year in their level of writing. As a staff we have created a rubric to hold the students accountable. This rubric is posted below. When your child is writing any assignment at home, please hold them to the fifth grade standard. The rubric is not unfamiliar to the students. A checklist with goals is in their Go Folder (pictured below). Please review your child's checklist and goals with them at home. The rubric itself is in every subject notebook, and it is posted in every classroom. We are continually amazed by the quality of work our children produce and fully expect each child to meet their goal.
Stride Academy
We do have Stride Academy again this year. It is a great online program for the kids to play and have fun while strengthening their reading and math skills. It works at their level and targets specific areas of need. Please login and enjoy! Please find your child's homeroom teacher information below.
