13 (Math) Rules that Expire!
As teachers, we often teach math the way we were taught which may or may not be how we should be teaching our students. "Rules" were used to help us learn, but do some rules expire? Should they be taught? The article may challenge our understanding and push our thinking. It also poses some questions:
- How does the language (vocabulary) we use impact student understanding?
- How do the "shortcuts" we teach students, with positive intention, hinder our students' ability to develop a deeper conceptual understanding?
This article would make for great discussion to provoke thinking in the area of math instruction.

Teacher's College Reading & Writing Project (TCRWP)
Meet Graham Fletcher... Another Math Friend :)
Graham Fletcher is an excellent math teacher that I have learned so much from! He has done a lot of collaboration work with Christina Tondevold who I have featured in this spot for the past few editions!
These are my FAVORITE videos related to PROGRESSIONS in math. They are excellent professional learning opportunities for teachers and are great tools to even use with parents! The 3-Act Tasks might be nice provocations to launch a math unit! They are organized by grade level and standards.
Building Automaticity with Base 10 Cards- These are a great resource. Videos available for professional learning purposes along with downloadable cards!
