ELA: Comparing Literature

In ELA, we have been reading fables, folktales, pourquois tales, and trickster tales. Oh my goodness, did they LOVE those trickster tales!! The story Tops and Bottoms was hilarious! The lazy bear kept getting tricked by that clever rabbit! Students also enjoyed creating their own book trailer through imovie and posted them onto Seesaw. Mrs. Sutter, our icoach has been teaching us lessons on how to use imovie, Seesaw, and Epic Books. Look out world...Woods Creek's second graders are super tech savy!! We also started an Author Study on the incredible, Jan Brett! We read The Mitten, The Hat, Gingerbread Baby, and The Wild Christmas Reindeer. During this Author Study, we will be comparing and contrasting her books along with retelling, summarizing, reviewing cause and effect and writing a winter narrative. When we return from break, we will be starting ELA Unit 4, which will help us explore the world of Facts and Opinions!

In math, we finished Unit 3! What a fun unit; the children really enjoyed learning geometry and measurement. Our next Unit will focus on finding the value of various coin combinations. Children will also combine different coins to equal one dollar. When we return from break, students will learn two methods for 2-digit subtraction.

Social Studies

We are learning about holidays around the world and holiday traditions in Social Studies. Next week, students will be switching classes between Ms. Houk's and Mrs. Satalino's class to learn about how Germany, France, Australia, and Greenland celebrate Christmas. Students will even get their own passports!!

Writer's Workshop

Children are still LOVING Writer's Workshop! We will be having fun exploring figurative language. Students will be writing idioms, similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and onomatopoeias in their books. It will be creative writing at its best!
