Friday Focus!
It has been a few weeks, hasn't it!
It is a great time of year to remember...
It is hard to ignore that the holiday season is full of advertisements that show the picture perfect family nestled inside a house straight out of a Norman Rockwell masterpiece. The floor is littered with presents and the table is full of food. For some of our students this could not be further from the truth. The holidays are cause for stress, anxiety, depression, and they don't often come with any feelings of happiness. What this comes with is a mix of emotions that many of our kids aren't equipped to handle. In some cases the students experience negative backlash from the stress that is put on parents during the holidays as well.
So what happens? We know all too well that these emotions manifest as behaviors. A cross look, rude comment, and general "don't care" ,attitude, among many many other issues, become safety blankets for students that may not experience holidays in the same way and want to save face.
The last three weeks have been a whirlwind in the office and I am finding that I need to remind myself of the Holiday Effect before I address an issue that has sauntered into my office and plopped down in the chair.

Teacher: "Um...what?"
Student A: "I mean...not David Hasselhoff...he's like German or something...I mean I'm not Spearfish."
Teacher: "Do you mean Shakespeare?"
Student A: "Yeah...him...I mean..I'm not Beethoven or something..."
