World Down Syndrome Day
World Down Syndrome Day is a global awareness initiative that is celebrated annually on March 21. On this day, people with Down Syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world, organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and advocate for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down Syndrome. Scottsburg Middle School also wants to honor this day by participating in awareness efforts and by supporting a local organization devoted to elevating the opportunities given to people with Down Syndrome in Scott County. Our recognition and celebration of this day is two-fold and involves every SMS student.
First, SMS sixth grade students will be visiting with guest speakers from Inspired Grounds Cafe. This local business is in the process of fundraising to build a coffee shop in Scottsburg that will provide employment to those with special needs. Currently, Scott County lacks many opportunities for these individuals to work and grow as adults. Sixth graders will also spend the remainder of their day learning more about a variety of disabilities as part of their annual Disability Awareness Day activities.
Second, we invite ALL SMS students to support the fundraising efforts of Inspired Grounds Cafe by participating in a pajama pants and funky socks day on Thursday, March 21! As part of the global awareness campaign, people are encouraged to wear funky socks to show support and bring more awareness via social media with the hashtag #LotsofSocks. For $1.00, you can show off your funky socks with your favorite pair of pajama pants at SMS and get in on the fun and awareness. SMS sixth graders and teachers will collect your donation in the main hall before school. Of course, you’re always welcome to give more than a dollar in support of Inspired Grounds Cafe!

Bright Ideas Finals!
The winning team designed a Multi-Activity Hosting Building in a currently vacant Scottsburg building. The MAHB team was Vicki Arney, Alexis Akers, Jeremiah Labaff, and Nate Rowland. Their win earned them a large chunk of change as well as the respect of our judges: Russ Comer, Matt Uhl, and Brooke Schaffer (WesBanco), Jim Gladden (Genesis), Al Riggle (Kiwanis), and Kelly Dulaney (Scott County Chamber of Commerce). A huge thank you goes out to all of these individuals, our prize donors, and Mrs. Naugle!
