Extended Passing Period Trial

One of the ideas that has come out of various discussions surrounding the Challenge Success program is a modification to the bell schedule that would allow more time between classes. The thought is that the additional time between classes would allow for a slower pace to the day, more time for teacher-student interactions before and after class, time to transition between classes for both students and teachers and potentially the ability to use the restroom at a time other than break or lunch. We recently discussed the idea in Leadership and the group feels there are several benefits for BOTH students and teachers that warrant giving this a try. As a result, Beckman piloted a version of the schedule the week of January 21st. The schedule received extremely positive reviews from both teachers and students (98.3% of students gave a positive review), so we decided to extend the trial another week and are currently working on plans to continue a version of the schedule indefinitely. Here are some quotes directly from our student survey that received over 1000 responses:

"It impacted me in a positive way. It allowed to me to refresh my mind before going into the next class. I felt like in class I was paying more attention."

"It impacted me in a positive way, it had allowed me to talk with teachers after the bell for a longer period of time and had allowed me to use the restroom between classes rather than taking time away from class."

"I noticed that everyone looked more related and positive during passing period. Before the change i would see kids rushing to class, but now they can relax and even have time to talk to teachers about grades, or if they have any questions."

ASB Update

Over the past couple of weeks, ASB held a Spikeball tournament in which each of the grade levels competed for the title of "Spikeball Champion." The winner from each of the grade levels played in the finals last Wednesday. In addition, ASB held Winter Formal lunchtime activities revolving around the "Starry Night" theme. Finally, Our very own Beckman students are working to help Beckman High School’s “Patriot Power! walk team” reach its goal of $12,000 for the Lupus Foundation’s “Walk to End Lupus Now” charity event. The walk will be held on June 1st, 2019 at the Orange County Great Park. The event raises critical funds to improve the quality of life for all people affected by Lupus through programs of research, education, support, and advocacy. Meet Dylan Thoerner

Time is running out if you haven’t see Dylan Thoerner play basketball for the Patriots. Dylan is a Senior and has committed to Tufts University and play for the Jumbos this next Fall. Back in late December, Dylan became Beckman’s all-time leading scorer surpassing the previous mark of 1364 points set by Michael Yee. Since breaking that record, Dylan has continued to add to his mark with games that include a 33 point outburst at Woodbridge on January 25th. Keep in mind that Dylan is not catching teams by surprise while doing this. Dylan was first team all-league and all-CIF after his Junior season and is the focal point of the opposition’s defense every night. There isn’t anything flashy about Dylan’s game except the results. Coach Goins added, “Dylan has been the most coachable player I’ve ever had the chance to work with. You only need to instruct him once, and from then on he executes the instruction consistently every time on the floor.” Right now, Dylan has the Patriots still challenging for their first league title in the program’s history and hopefully an extended stay in the CIF playoffs.

On June 1, 2019 a number of Beckman students will be participating in the 2019 Walk to End Lupus Now® at the Great Park of Orange County. The event raises critical funds to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus through programs of research, education, support, and advocacy. Lupus affects several of our students and also affects family members of our staff.

Our walk team, Patriot Power! - Beckman High School, set an ambitious goal to raise over $12,000. The leading high school fundraising team in the country was from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which raised just a little over $10,000. We can do better! Gather your friends and family and show your Patriot pride by walking with us on June 1. Please sign up for the walk at http://support.lupus.org/goto/beckman
