The Thankful Issue
Last Week during staff meeting
Thanks to Ms. Vogel for sharing about an article she read. She accepted my "voluntelling" her to share it this week with you all :-)
From the Desk of Ms. Vogel
I recently read an Edutopia article titled “The Warm Demander: An Equity Approach.” Matt Alexander and the staff at June Jordan School for Equity in San Francisco developed a four-part framework on how to become a warm demander.
#1 – Believe in the Impossible – Do we really believe that all children can learn? According to David Shenk, “Limitations in achievement are not due to inadequate genetic assets, but to our inability, so far, to tap into what we already have.” We, as teachers, need to believe and continuously remind our students of their potential.
#2 – Build Trust – Learning begins with trust. We need to listen to our students and learn about what matters to them most. We have to be vulnerable and share our true selves with students. We should set firm boundaries around the things that matter, and give autonomy to students within those boundaries.
#3 – Teach Self-Discipline – Warm demanders demand that students demonstrate self-discipline. It does not mean to micromanage students or punish them when they don’t meet the expectations set. It means that we need to teach discipline to our students and help them understand that hard work and effort lead to success.
#4 – Embrace Failure – Warm demanders teach their students how important it is to have a growth mindset. True learning comes through our mistakes and failures. We need to create opportunities and celebrate mistakes in our classrooms.
