Principal's Weekly Update -August 10, 2018

Otsego Elementary School is a great place to be! I can not express enough how thankful I am for our dedicated staff, caring students, and active parents. Otsego is truly a family, and I am grateful to be a part of it!
OES is excited to continue PBIS this year. As a district, we officially rolled PBIS out during the 2017-2018 school year. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports, and it is a framework for schools to provide consistent expectations across the building, common language the students understand, and instruction on how students are expected to behave. We are looking forward to continue improving our policies, procedures and routines to fully align with PBIS.
This year we will continue the implementation of our Otsego Literacy Framework for our English Language Arts Curriculum. (A link to this document can be found on the right side of this page). For the writing portion of the Framework, we will continue to use the Ohio Writing Project (OWP). This is an ongoing endeavor, and although teachers have had multiple trainings on this initiative, we will continue to participate in additional training sessions and opportunities. These changes have already proven to be meaningful for students as we prepare them to be lifelong citizens and productive members of society, and we are excited to continue to see the growth in students as we continue implementation for multiple years.
In addition to these new projects, we will continue another year of our 4 day specials rotation schedule, daily I/E (intervention and enrichment) block, and our new grade card. All of these initiatives have been extremely positive!

Community Wide Dinner in the Parking Lot the Night of Open House!
The Otsego Elementary PTO will be sponsoring various food trucks in the parking lot from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. on Thursday, August 16th

OES Parent Drop Off & Pick Up Procedures
Please use the entire length of the drop off zone (even past the crosswalk) to keep the line moving. If all cars pull up as far as they possibly can we can fit more vehicles along the sidewalk and more students can exit at a time. This will make drop-off go quicker while maintaining safety.
Students should only be let out on the side of the car that is next to the curb. This is to avoid students being hit by a moving car in the lane farther away from the curb. If your student needs to get out on that side of the car, please park in a parking spot and have your student walk into the building using the crosswalk.
Please do not stop in the crosswalk. If you are dropping a student off, please do not stop your car in the crosswalk. This is a safe place for students to cross, and when there are cars in the crosswalk it creates a safety concern.
The second lane is for driving only. No students should be let out of the car in the lane farther from the curb. Students should only be exiting cars onto the sidewalk so that we can ensure their safety.
Please remember to NOT park your car in front of the school! The line needs to keep moving to efficiently get students into the school in a timely manner, and when there is a parked car in the drop-off line, the whole process gets backed up. If for some reason you need to leave your car, please use the available parking spaces.

Important Transportation Information
Elementary Bus Passes: We will no longer be able to accept bus passes for grades PK-5 for your child to ride home with a friend on another bus route. We have seen our transportation numbers increase over the past several years and in order to continue to operate the most efficient way possible, we will no longer be able to accept bus passes in the elementary.

Important Food Service Information
To better assist our parents, we have implemented an online free and reduced meal application. This will eliminate having to get a paper application, filling it out and returning it to your child’s school.
Fill out the online application under www.lunchapplication.com , just as you would the paper application. Once the application is completed we are notified so we can complete the application process. This will reduce your notification time.
Please make sure you have a correct mailing address on the application, so the notification letter gets to you.

New Instant Alert Notification
OES Extended Care
Otsego Local Schools offers an Extended Care program for students age 5 through fifth grade. The before school program starts at 6:30am and goes to the start of school at 9:00am. The after school program begins at 3:30pm and closes at 6:00pm.
The hourly rate is $3.00 for the first child; $1.50 for the second child; $1.00 for the third child; and the fourth child and beyond are free. There is a $10.00 per family yearly registration fee which runs from June 1st to May 31st each school year.

2018-2019 Online Registration
ALL PARENTS MUST REGISTER THEIR STUDENT(S) for the 2018-2019 school year. Online Registration will begin July 1st through Final Forms. You will be receiving an email from Final Forms around that time, SO PLEASE DO NOT DELETE IT! Follow the instructions in the email to register your child. Information from the previous school year should transfer over to the current year for ease and convenience.
If you do not receive an email from Final Forms please check your SPAM/JUNK folder and then contact Lisa Austin at firstname.lastname@example.org or 419-823-4381 ext. 1100, as we may have an incorrect email address on file for you.
Let's start with camp. If you have a student in 5th grade we make our yearly trip to Camp Palmer on Wednesday, September 12th and return on Friday, September 14th. Which does not leave us with much time after the start of the school year. So here is what you need to know.
If you were unable to attend our Back to School event on Wednesday and pick up the camp packet, do not fret. I have a copy for you in the office with your student's name on it. I will be sending these packets home on the first day of school, so please be on the lookout for them. This packet will have all the information that you and your student will need for camp. There are several pages that will need to be returned to me by the end of the school day on September 7th at the latest. Please look the packet over as soon as you can and contact me with any questions. In addition to returning the needed information, I will also need your student's $40 camp fee by September 7th.
On September 12th we ask that the campers be dropped off at school by a parent, to ensure they have everything they need for camp. We will meet near the High School Commons entrance at 9:30 am. After checking in, parents are able to leave. We will return to school on Friday, September 14th around 1:30 pm. At this time all campers will be dismissed for the day. We again ask that a parent (or other noted caring adult) be present to pick your student up.
If you are a parent interested in attending camp, please let me know. We cannot guarantee that all volunteers will be able to go, but we will do our best to honor requests. We cannot for Camp!
Now it is time for a Girls on the Run (GOTR) update. Empowered…strong…inspiring…healthy…FUN! These are just a few of the words that have been used to describe the Girls on the Run program from our past participants. We are excited to announce that the Girls on the Run program is returning for another season! We had so much fun and learned so much last season we are gearing up for the new year! We will offer a different curriculum with new games and activities, but cover the same core values and tackle important life lessons. New participants are encouraged to sign up and girls who have already completed the program are invited back! If we have enough girls sign up and find volunteer coaches (we currently have two) we will be off and running in late February! Knight In Shining Armor Nominations
Please use the following form to inform OHS Student Council about a family in need within the school district. While the family does not need to have students in the district, we do ask that they are a member of the Otsego Community. Please use this form to share information about their current situation as well as how they can best be assisted.
Please be sure to understand that while Knight in Shining Armor (KISA) would love to help all community members in need, we are still a new program, and may not have the funds to do so. With that being said, we will consider each request on a case by case basis. Filling this form out does not guarantee that we will be able to assist the family, but we will try our hardest to do so!
Here are some things that we have done with KISA funds:
- School supplies were purchased for multiple families.
- Gas money has been provided to get to and from medical treatment.
- Food cards have been provided to help families afford meals while going through medical treatment.
- Cash donations have been made to families to help assist in paying bills during medical treatment.
- Gift cards and supplies have been provided to help make ends meet after housing emergencies have occurred.
Please refer to this link at any point during the year as a need arises, and KISA will do their best to help out!
Community Events & Information
SAVE ALUMINUM CAN TABS
Please help our students by collecting tabs from aluminum cans. Each tab is easy to remove and can be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The tabs help fund various projects for Ronald McDonald Houses and its visitors. Send the tabs in a bag to the school and our students will do the rest!
SAVE BOX TOPS
You can help the school earn money for supplies by collecting Box Tops. Our PTO collects and counts them and puts the money straight back into the school. (We earn 10 cents per Box Top). If you are able to collect a lot of these, it would be great if you could turn them in in groups of 50, but we will take them even if they are not grouped together.
