Moral Focus
The moral focus virtue for the months of August and September is conscience. Conscience does fall under the umbrella of wisdom. You may use the word wisdom to help teach the concept, however, the scholars are to be taught the word conscience since it is a little different. Our conscience is the part of us that gives an uneasy feeling in our stomachs when we are tempted to do something wrong. We may be tempted to do the wrong thing, however, our conscience guides us to stop and make the right decision. For those classes presenting at the weekly moral focus assemblies, the expectation is to use the word conscience and discuss it with the wing. Moral focus writing homework is to be assigned weekly as well. The scholars are expected to write using the word conscience, not wisdom. Please save your best writing samples weekly. I will be asking you for your overall best writing piece to decide which scholar's writing will be hung up on the bulletin board in the hallway.

Positive Language
I am hearing a lot of positive language in the wing. Keep up the good work! Remember to give 3 positives for every negative you say. It is easy to correct a scholar's behavior with negative words and a negative tone. I challenge all of you to stop and think before you speak. How can you change how the correction is said in a more positive and respectful way. Many of our scholars are not used to being spoken to in a caring and respectful way. It is our job to expose them to this and use this language (spoken and non-spoken) in a more positive way. We cannot change what happens outside of school, but we can change how students are addressed while in school. Be the change!
Below is a social contract I saw in one of the classrooms. I love how it is worded positively without using the words, no, don't etc. (Sorry it is sideways. I couldn't get it to upload correctly, but you get the idea.) Great job stating the expectations positively!
