September 2022- Enon Elementary School
Principal's Message
I would like to compliment your children on how they have started out the year with great Enon PRIDE behavior! They are doing a great job demonstrating positive attitudes, respect and responsibility, integrity, determination and excellence in addition to being on time. Our attendance rates have been strong so far. Keep up the great work!
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Back to School Nights! Our K-2 Back to School Night is Tuesday, September 6th with sessions at 6:30 pm and 7:10 pm. in case you have more than one child in this grade range. Our 3rd-5th grade Back to School Night is Tuesday, September 13th also with two sessions at 6:30 pm and 7:10 pm. This meeting is about the curriculum your child will cover this year, classroom expectations and ideas for you to support your child's learning at home. We truly appreciate your partnership.
We also have our 5th Grade Vocabulary Parade on Thursday, Sept. 8th. Parents are welcome to attend and should arrive at the school to sign in between 2:30-2:40 pm since the parade will start promptly at 2:45 pm.
We will also begin allowing parents back in to eat lunch with your child beginning October 3rd. You are welcome to bring in a special lunch for them and eat with them at the "parent" table. Please note that only your child will be allowed to join you- not your child's friends.
We also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15-October 15th. We will be featuring this celebration on our morning announcements this month along with some different displays and stories in the library.
Thank you for a great start to our school year! If I can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate to reach out to contact me at anytime.

September is Attendance Awareness Month
Every day counts! School attendance is vital to academic achievement. Send your children to school on time every day unless they are sick. This creates good habits and shows that school is important to your family. Please notify the school if your student will be absent.
If you are having difficulty sending your child to school for any reason, then contact your school’s social worker or counselor. Absences add up, and excessive absences may affect receiving credit for classes or promotion to the next grade. Attendance Works offers resources to share with families.
Assessment Information
Kindergarten students will participate in the VKRP (Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program). You can read more about this here. All students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and some 3rd graders will also take a reading screener required by the state called PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screener).
SOL Growth Test Information for 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades
Last year, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation §22.1-253.13:3 changing the way schools measure learning for elementary and middle school students in reading and math. Previously, students completed a single Standards of Learning test to measure academic performance at the end of the school year. With this new legislation, students in grades 3-8 will take new SOL growth assessments this fall and winter in addition to traditional spring SOL tests. This will allow parents and teachers to see how students progress throughout the year in reading and math.
The state requires that all students in grades 3-8 take the fall and winter growth assessments in reading and math with the exception of middle school students enrolled in algebra or geometry. All students will take traditional SOL tests this spring for reading and math; selected grade levels will also take science, social studies and/or writing SOL tests at the end of the school year. The purpose of fall testing is to identify the starting point of each student’s learning for the new school year; there is no reason for students to prepare or study for the fall test in any way. The fall and winter growth assessments and spring SOL tests are computer adaptive, and they will use similar types of questions. Fall and winter tests will be shorter than spring tests. The state also requires that all students test at school under the supervision of school staff, so no remote testing options will be available.
Your child is scheduled to take the new SOL growth assessments during the weeks of Sept. 12-30. You can help by ensuring that your child arrives at school promptly on the testing days with plenty of rest the night before and a good breakfast that morning.
Thank you for all that you do to support our school.

Community meetings about bond referendum begin this week
The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors and School Board, accompanied by county staff, will host two community meetings this week to share information and answer questions on the upcoming bond referendum. Meetings begin at 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the CTC @ Hull auditorium, 13900 Hull Street Road (Clover Hill District)
Thursday, Sept. 8, at Thomas Dale High School, 3626 W. Hundred Road (Bermuda District)
Chesterfield residents will vote this fall on the Community Facilities Bond Plan, which would authorize the issuance of $540 million in general obligation bonds. If approved, the Community Facilities Bond Plan will, over the next eight to 10 years, fund 26 capital improvement projects split among four categories: schools, public safety, libraries and parks.
Some $375 million of the bonds would be allocated to Chesterfield County Public Schools for seven projects that include replacing three elementary schools and building another while also building a new high school in western Route 360, expanding Thomas Dale High School and replacing Midlothian Middle School. Meanwhile, the $165 million that would be allocated for county government projects includes $81.1 million for public safety, $45.7 million for libraries and $38.2 million for parks and recreation.

Start with Hello Week!
Start with Hello is a program to encourage us all to reach out to one another and to build a great community at Enon.
Simply saying hello to someone can brighten their whole day! There are many ways to greet others in English and in other languages. You can say Hola in Spanish or Bonjour in French.
Remember, we ALL belong at Enon Elementary School, and being a part of the Gator family connects us all to one another. We hope that as the year goes on, we will get to learn all about one another so that we can strengthen our bonds of friendship.
The week of September 19th is Start with Hello week for elementary schools in Chesterfield County. Start with Hello is an initiative from the Sandy Hook Promise foundation to encourage building connected, inclusive school communities. We will help students connect with the Start with Hello activities by having them dress the part so check out our flyer with Spirit Days Monday is Crazy Socks Day, Tuesday is Tacky Tuesday, Wednesday is Wear Green Day, Thursday is Super Hero Shirt Day and Friday is Enon Stands Together day (school shirt or colors).
