Eagle's Nest
The official e-newsletter of Corona Elementary
September 1, 2020.
Happy September and congratulations on advancing to the next level of our virtual school year! I am proud and excited about how our community has responded to the additional stress and frustrations that have been put forth on us as parents, teachers, students and learners. Our patience and will is going to be tested as we continue in this new format, but our optimistic attitude is going to push us through for the benefits of our children. As I have said before, our students are watching us to see how we respond to challenges. They learn from us as much as they learn from a textbook. Our tenacity and relentlessness will not only make our situations better, but will also demonstrate that giving up is not an option!
As we move further into the school year please encourage and monitor your child’s efforts to complete independent work that has been assigned to them on Google Classroom. This independent work will be graded and will reflect on final grades in report cards and progress reports. This work is assigned daily and needs to be turned in via Google Classroom to get credit. At this point in the school year we have a large percentage of students who are not submitting completed work. Please become familiar with Google Classroom and request assistance from your child’s teacher if you need help using this program.
A final reminder I want to share is in regards to Reading Counts (RC) which is a program to encourage students to read independently at their level to increase their lexile level. The program tracks the number of books read, the number of words read and assigns points to the students based on completion of tests. At Corona, we assign RC degrees to students based on accumulated points at every trimester. Students can read books at home or online and access RC to take test via Symbaloo. Students can check out online books from Follett Shelf or from the Ontario Library for free. Please encourage you child to read, read, read!

Are you ready for i-Ready?
A major change for this 2020-21 school year is the introduction of the i-Ready Assessment. All OMSD schools will be using this individualized assessment system to evaluate student academic progress and personalize intervention in areas of need. The benefits to this new system are it:
- Pinpoints students’ strengths and knowledge gaps at the sub-skill level
- Delivers individualized learning paths in i-Ready Personalized Instruction
- Saves time by automatically grouping students and offering targeted instructional recommendations
- Helps educators spot trends across student groups
More information on i-Ready assessment results and what they mean will be coming soon! Click below for a short introductory video (in English or Spanish) to learn about i-Ready Assessment.
Corona's Gone Google!
As you already know, Corona Elementary is providing online instruction via the Google Classroom platform. A major benefit of Google Classroom is that students are able to complete assignments and tasks, take quizzes, receive grades, collaborate, and compose written responses all in one place. However, Google Classroom is not just new to you and students, but teachers as well. Corona teachers have been taking online professional development via the Google Teacher Center. After completion of the 13-unit Fundamentals training, teachers have the opportunity to test and earn Google Educator Level 1 Certification. Your Corona teachers are committed to demonstrating proficiency with the tools that help your student learn. To learn more about Google Teacher Certification, click here.
Eagle Eye On...
Ms. Pilar Rodriguez
Corona Office Assistant
My name is Pilar Rodriguez, I am the second oldest of four siblings. I attended part of my elementary schooling in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico but then I attended Roosevelt Elementary School in Pomona, California. I have three children named Paul (31), Erika (29), and Liza (19). I began working for the Ontario-Montclair School District in 1996 but began working at Corona Elementary in 2014 as the attendance clerk. A couple of my favorite things about working at Corona Elementary is being the attendance liason between parents and teachers and seeing the students arrive every day. As a result of the precautions taken, not seeing the students has been one of the things I miss. One piece of advice I would give to parents is to continue to support their children everyday because education is the key to a successful life. During my free time I enjoy swimming, traveling, spending time with family, and going on evening walks. This summer I would have traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada and Mexico but due to COVID-19 I will miss out on the annual Dia de Los Muertos Celebration in Michoacán, Mexico.
