New Year, New Decade, New Resolutions

Welcome to 2020...the year of focus and vision. While the turn of this new decade did not bring about many predictions, such as flying cars and houses, human telepathy and teleportation, or the foot becoming one big toe, it does bring an opportunity to make a new resolution. The most popular resolutions are to lose weight, exercise more, get organized, learn a new skill, save more money/spend less money, spend more time with family and friends, or travel more. Whatever resolution you may or may not have made, here are some helpful tips to keep your goals longer than 2 weeks:


1) Start slow with your resolution. This will keep you focused and motivated while keeping that overwhelmed feeling from derailing your efforts. If you fall off track, get right back at it as soon as possible.

2) Forgive yourself when you forget. Experts say it takes 21 consecutive days to begin a new habit. During those first days, don't give up if you forget. You are human and we all get distracted. Write down your resolution. This will help you to not forget when life gets busy. Write down your big goals and break them out into smaller, more attainable goals to help you stay focused.

3) Remember that change is gradual. Celebrate the small ways you are on track and those moments will lead to days, weeks, and months of progress.

4) Stay positive. Attitude is everything and keeping an optimistic outlook will help you to achieve your goals. Allow yourself to feel the pride of a job well done!

5) Tell others about your resolution/goals. This helps with accountability and support if you find someone with the same goal.


My resolution is to focus on supporting our teachers and students to learn and grow in 2020. Together we can make George Washington the best elementary school in Iowa!

Student Wellness in PE with SWITCH

Each year our students participate in the SWITCH program during PE with Mr. Sprague. SWITCH ("School Wellness Integration Targeting Child Health") is an innovative school wellness initiative designed to support and enhance school wellness programming. Through SWITCH, schools can help students to "Switch what they Do, View, and Chew!" The first part of the program is DO and will help students switch up to 60 minutes or more of activity each day. The second part is VIEW to switch down to 2 hours of total screen time each day. The final part, CHEW, has students switching up to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. SWITCH will begin the week of January 20 and continue for 12 weeks.

As a parent, you can check your student's progress and join the SWITCH community. There will be an email sent with a PARENT HANDOUT to help you maneuver the website. There are also great recipes and resources available through Iowa State Extension. Another way to talk to your student about SWITCH is with these free downloadable Mealtime Conversation Cards. During P/T conferences next month, be sure to stop by the gym to learn more about SWITCH!

After Tyler’s father is injured in a tractor accident, his family is forced to hire migrant Mexican workers to help save their Vermont farm from foreclosure. Tyler isn’t sure what to make of these workers. Are they undocumented? And what about the three daughters, particularly Mari, the oldest, who is proud of her Mexican heritage but also increasingly connected to her American life. Her family lives in constant fear of being discovered by the authorities and sent back to the poverty they left behind in Mexico. Can Tyler and Mari find a way to be friends despite their differences?

In a novel full of hope, but with no easy answers, Julia Alvarez weaves a beautiful and timely story that will stay with readers long after they finish it.
