About Blessed Damian
He was born Tremelo in Belgium. Where he was working many people died of leprosy, syphilis and influenza. Damian fully supported the lepers that were sent to Molokai, he helped them and lived amongst them for most years of his life.
He was the first person to offer his help to the 816 lepers that lived there. He did much for them such as building a church on the island and established a parish. One morning he went to bathe and burned his skin. It was that morning that Damian discovered that he had got leprosy.
He died at the age of 49 April 15th 1889 in Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii.
