Hey y'all,

This update contains info about coming up to DHS tomorrow, medication, meals for students, financial procedures, and plans for work going forward. I know many of you, especially our seniors, have questions about May. We will address those questions as soon as we're able.

Message to Students 3/17/20

Coming to DHS on Wednesday, March 18th

Healthy students who need to retrieve belongings that are necessary for learning or of significant value from DHS may come in on Wednesday, March 18th from 12 pm to 5 pm (Please note the condensed schedule). Any student needing to check out a Chromebook because they do not have a computer at home should also come in at these times. You do not, under any circumstances, have to come to DHS tomorrow. If you've received a message from a teacher or other staff member that makes you think otherwise, please know this was a well-intended miscommunication. Please only come up to school if you need to pick something up.

If you are not well enough to come to school, please let me know and we’ll do our best to make a plan to help you.

As this temporary new normal sets in, we ask that everyone abide by the following regulations while on campus. We're all working hard to minimize infection risks right now and ask that appropriate distance be maintained between people on campus. Overall, students did not effectively follow these rules on Monday while in the building. If you plan to come to DHS on Wednesday, you must maintain appropriate social distance.

  • Students and parents must enter through the doors off of Commerce Drive

  • Students and parents must not congregate while in the building and should plan to stay only long enough to retrieve their belongings. Students may not walk through the halls with friends.

  • Students must announce their names as they enter and must check back out at the desk as they leave. Students must also announce any specific locations they need to visit when they arrive.

  • Chromebooks will be available in the DHS library for students without computers at home. While parents may bring students to DHS, we ask that only students enter the building, unless medication or a Chromebook needs to be picked up. Medication must be picked up by a parent or guardian. Chromebooks can be picked up by either a parent or a student.

  • If you are unable to open your locker, please stop by the library and let us know.

DHS is not a place to congregate or meet up for any other reason while we remain closed. We will have paper copies of some assignments available on Wednesday in bins outside of the school. To limit the number of students in the building at one time, we ask that students abide by the following schedule, where possible:

  • Last names A-H: 12:00-1:15 pm

  • Last names I-N: 1:15-2:30 pm

  • Last names O-T: 2:30-3:45 pm

  • Last names U-Z: 3:45-5:00 pm

If you plan to come to DHS tomorrow, please sign up for a time slot using this appointment page. Please use the scheme above when signing up for an appointment. I will add more slots, as needed. If you're able, please tell us what you need to retrieve in the details of the appointment.

Meals for Students

Meal distribution will begin on March 18. The Nutrition Department will provide all students the option to pick up two meals a day from Decatur High School. These meals will be a cold breakfast and shelf-stable lunch. The program is open to all City Schools of Decatur students. We are unable to extend this meal service to siblings who are not CSD students, parents/guardians, or the general public. Meals will be available for pickup daily 9:00am-11:00am. Students may only pick up two meals (one breakfast and one lunch) per day and may not purchase additional meals. The CSD student must be present to pick up their meal. To avoid lines and to adhere to social distancing best practices, we ask that you take advantage of the full window for pick up. Families will not be allowed to linger after meal pick up.

All meal prices will remain the same as a typical school day and all approved free and reduced lunch applications will be honored. It is unclear whether this is something our students will take advantage of; we will evaluate this program throughout our closure to determine if participation is high enough to continue or require modifications.


Due to our uncertain timeline for school reentry, Superintendent Dr. Dude has asked that ALL stored medication be distributed to families. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medication. If you prefer not to pick up your child’s medication, please contact your Nurse Fletcher. If medication is not retrieved, it may be inaccessible for an undetermined amount of time. Please take that into consideration when making your decision as to whether to retrieve your child’s medication. Nurse Fletcher will be available Wednesday, March 18th from 12 pm to 5 pm in the clinic. If you are unable to retrieve your medications during this time, please contact Nurse Fletcher directly at hfletcher1@csdecatur.net.

Plans for work going forward

As mentioned in my March 13th update, teachers had until the end of today, Tuesday March 17th, to plan supplemental instruction for students. This approach was taken at all CSD schools. Administration is checking in on these plans to make sure that appropriate assignments are provided over the next seven school days. If your student is not seeing work for one or more classes, please have them reach out directly to their teachers by email. Over the next several days, we will be working to make sure that all students have access to instructional materials in preparation for assigning mandatory work, beginning Friday, March 27th. By then, we will communicate how we will grade student work in the event of a closure that lasts beyond Spring Break.

Starting Friday, March 27th, you can expect to see

  • Students being assigned mandatory work in all of their classes
  • Teachers assigning work that will be graded
  • Some assignments that were paused last week picking back up where they left off

Starting Friday, March 27th, you should not expect to see

  • Expectations for students to follow the DHS bell schedule from home
  • Expectations that teachers follow the DHS bell schedule from home

Our teachers and our students are wearing many hats right now. Many of our teachers are not only teaching their DHS students, they're also homeschooling their own kids. Many are also taking care of family members in other ways. Many of our students have responsibilities to younger siblings and other family members during the day, as well. We will create a system that sets reasonable expectations of our teachers and students that gives all students rich learning opportunities.

Financial Procedures Paused

All student and family-related financial procedures, including class dues payments, are paused. As we learn more about the length of our closure and our plans for future events, we will determine how to address dues that have not been paid and potential refunds for dues that have been paid.
