Notes from the Administration

It's hard to believe that we have already completed the first full week of February! Students are working hard to set their new monthly goals as well as their goals for 3rd quarter. Ask your child what their WIG is for this month. On Thursday February 7th, we held our Avoid, Deny, and Defend drill. We are extremely proud of how our students handled themselves during the drill. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.

Congratulations to our Attendance winners for January!

FCPS Perceptual Survey

Dear FCPS Parents and Guardians:

FCPS is launched a survey on Thursday, January 24 to gather your perceptions about your child's school. The survey will close on February 22nd.

WHES sent a letter home with each student on January 24th, explaining the survey. The letter includes a link for parents and guardians to access and complete an online survey. This link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FAM2107 is specific to Whittier Elementary.

A limited number of paper copies of the survey will also be available in the front office. Parent/guardian feedback is important to FCPS and the staff at Whittier Elementary as we continue our work building on strengths and striving to make improvements as a partner in your child’s education.

Please contact our front office if you have any questions about the survey. Thank you!

Out of District Approval Process

Please be aware that the FCPS Regulation 400-15, the Assignment and Transfer of Students was recently revised to include new submission dates for yearly applications. The new dates that out-of-district applications must be submitted to the Department of Student Services are between January 2 and March 1 prior to each new school year. You will have access to reapply by going to the FCPS website at FCPS.org, going to the link that states “For Families and Students,” and then scrolling to the out-of-district section. There you will find a link for the application that will be active starting on January 2, 2019 and will close at the end of business on March 1, 2019. If you are in need of a paper copy of the application, please contact 240-236-2493 to make this request.

FCPS will publish schools identified as over-capacity and thus restricted for the 2019-2020 school year after December 1, 2018. Please note that the restricted schools are not open to out-of-district transfers.

Service Dog in Training at Whittier

Whittier Elementary will be hosting a service dog in training. We are looking for Hopper to train in our 4th grade. Students in this grade will be receiving a letter specific to Hopper's training. If you have concerns or questions about the Service Animal in training, please reach out to Mrs. Schwiegerath @ amy.schwiegerath@fcps.org.

Gifted and Talented Nominations

The magnet program is designed for academically gifted students in grades 3 – 5 with superior performance in both language arts and mathematics. Nomination booklets were available beginning January 25, 2019 and may be obtained from the school office, the FCPS Office of Advanced Academics or online at http://www.fcps.org/advacademics under Elementary Magnet Program. Beginning January 25, 2019, the Office of Advanced Academics will be accepting nominations of present second through fourth grade students for possible placement in the magnet program for the 2019 - 2020 school year.

Students may be nominated for the magnet program by school staff, parents or jointly. Parents and teachers are encouraged to review information, including some characteristics of gifted students, that is posted at http://www.fcps.org/advacademics. Teacher nominations, parent nominations and a completed Parent/Guardian Rating Form are due in the school office by February 28, 2019, so that information required to complete the nomination packet may be gathered by school staff.

If you are interested in being a hero for a day (or half day) and would like to positively impact the students at Whittier ES, please contact Mr. Byrd at matthew.byrd@fcps.org We hope to see you at school soon!

Come join us for a technology fund raiser at Buffalo Wild Wings! On Monday February 11 from 11:00 am - Close, 15% of food sales during those hours will be donated to Whittier ES. Simply show the ticket to your server and you'll be helping our school reach its goal. This applies to all dine-in and carry out orders. Enjoy .65 boneless wings all day and help Whittier at the same time! Hope to see you there!

Blessings In a Backpack is collecting spare change (bills and checks also accepted) to help feed local students when school meals are unavailable.
