Magers Memo
April 13, 2019
FYI: Chromebook Security
In January, we began a pilot at six schools that changed the Chrome Web Store for students from “Allow all apps but those you want to block” to “Block all apps but those you want to allow.” We have reviewed the feedback provided by teachers at the pilot schools, listened to the experiences and recommendations from principals and will now move forward with making this change district wide for all elementary and middle school students. This change will take effect April 22nd.
The goal of this change is to reduce ways students may be off task while utilizing technology. This change is one step being taken to improve how technology is utilized and other avenues will continue to be explored.
To ensure clarity of what will be impacted, this change is only to the Chrome Web Store. No changes are being made to district web filtering with this change. Please continue to utilize the existing procedure for opening or blocking websites by contacting your building administrator with your request.

FYI-This went out to principals this week on Device Collection
As we enter fourth quarter the Information Technology and Blended Learning departments are preparing for collection of student Chromebooks and classroom iPads. Below is an overview of the anticipated process for this year. More communication will be coming out to leaders and teachers as we wrap the school year.
· Each school will select their day of collection. A few expectations for selecting a collection date.
o Chromebooks cannot be used after collection. This ensures correct repair information is collected.
o Students should continue taking Chromebooks home until the collection date for charging. Makeshift charging solutions at sites create safety hazards and are not permitted.
o Repairs will continue until the next to last day of the school year.
· Year two IGNiTE school devices will be used for Explore.
o A list of schools by cohort year can be found here.
o Year two schools will remove the student tag on the bottom of the Chromebooks.
o Year one and three schools will not remove the student tag and will store their Chromebooks. These devices will not be used for Explore and distributed back to the same students in the fall.
o Year one and three schools will store their devices in a specific location.
o Year two devices will be replaced with new devices next year as part of the refresh cycle.
· Chromebooks will be collected in classrooms (with limited exceptions noted below) and teachers provided with a collection website.
o The website will have the serial number of the Chromebook assigned to each student.
o Teachers will provide basic information regarding Chromebook damage, if applicable.
o Graduating seniors will have their devices collected in the library.
o Non-HP chargers will not be accepted for collection and should be sent home with the student if submitted for collection.
o Headphones provided to elementary students will go home with the students at the end of the year.
· Kajeets will be collected through the libraries.
o Elementary schools will collect Kajeets the week prior to their collection date. These devices may be picked up from sites by information technology to be used during Explore.
o Middle and high schools will collect Kajeets up to their collection date. These may also be collected by information technology but may not be picked up until after the start of Explore.
· Bins will be provided for collection a week prior to the school’s collection date.
o Two green bins and three blue bins will be provided for each classroom.
o The number of bins provided will be created from eSchool and verified with your Blended Learning Specialist.
· Blended learning specialists will work with you to provide training prior to collection on how to the use the website and what to expect during collection.
o The end of year planning will include identifying who will collect Chromebooks if students are absent on the day of collection and after school is out.
A successful collection will be key to a successful start of Explore. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
