Postcard: Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

This temple is a very religious place in the state of Kerala and there are millions even billions of people that come there everyday from all over Kerala. 2 years ago they had found gold all over the surroundings of the temple underground, the gold belongs to the past kings of Kerala and it was very surprising cause there was so many. It is located in Thiruvananthapuram the capital of Kerala which has the biggest population. The temple is made in honor of Lord Vishnu. The name of the temple means servant of Padmanabh. Between 1459 A.D the idol of Sree Padmanabhswamy was removed for "balalaya" for the purpose of recounstruction of the roof of the temple. This temple is made of gold and I mean all over every part of the building was carefully crafted a desingned with specific pictures or sculptures. In this temple the men can't wear shirts and can not go in with pants but only a munda (dothi) they are very stict there and it is a very holy place of worship. Also in the temple there is a square shaped pond where for pooja's or ritual prayers they dip there selfsm in water and pray then come back up.

What is Diwali ???

Diwali is an amazing celebration the Hindu's do which includes praying, fasting, and party time. Diwali is the festival of lights when everyone puts candles around the house and lights up the place. It is associated with the Hindu god Lakshmi, god of prosperity. It is celebrated on the 13/14 of October/November in the night. Diwali shows Lord Rama's glorious and long-awaited return to his Kingdom of Ayodhya after his 14 long years in the forest. It commemorates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakaasura who had kidnapped and terrorized gopis of Vrindavan. When the evil Naraka was killed Bhagwan Krishna and Satyabhaama, he begged pitifully for mercy; thus upon his entreaties, it was declared that this day of his death would be celebrated with great joy and festivity. It is also celebrated as the day Bhagwan Vishnu married Maha Lakshmi.

Bollywood !!!

Bollywood is the hindi film industry and is an amazing place. In bollywood there are movies, songs, and my favorite indian dancing. It is different than Hollywood and is much more exiting and festive. You get to wear all kinds of different costumes and do many dances. Bollywood was originally formed in Mumbai and still take place mostly there. Bollywood is the largest film producer in all of india and by the 1930's the industry produced over 200 cinemas per annum. Bollywood is only for hindi movies and it is in the language hindi. Bollywood started in 1899 and was invented by a person showing the first bollywood movie and then they started talkies. The Lumiere Brothers are the ones that introduced indian cinema to the world. Even if you haven't seen a bollywood film you could probably still imagine all the vibrant colors, many movements, and joyous faces of the happy actors and actresses. But what is the history of India’s national cinema, and how did it grow to become one of the country’s most powerful and financially lucrative industries, and the world leader in both the number of films produced each year as well as audience attendance? The word bollywood came from Hollywood but they changed the h into a b because of Bombay or now known as Mumbai. The word was made in the 1970's in a newspaper talking about gossip. However Indian cinema goes back all the way to 1913 and the famous silent film "Raja Harishchandra" the first ever indian film. Now in the present the industry is growing rapidly and is producing about 50 films every year.

Weather in India

In India the year is very weird with weather, the first six months is always HOT especially in March, April, and May. The last six months is filled with sad lonely rain. The climate of India resolves into six major climatic subtypes; their influences give rise to desert in the west, alpine tundra and glaciers in the north, humid tropical regions supporting rain forests in the southwest, and Indian Ocean island territories that flank the Indian subcontinent. The nation is largely subject to four seasons: winter (January and February), summer (March to May), a monsoon (rainy) season (June to September), and a post-monsoon period (October to December). The Tropic of Cancer runs through the center of India so the area can be tropical and very rainy. When the rain starts it is very dangerous because it can ruin the town and destroy everything. Also when it is hot, it is the hottest weather ever you would be melting faster than an ice cream cone.

Marriage Ceremony

OMG !!!!! India, India, India has the most amazing marriage ceremonies because they do it so well and amazing it is shocking. First they put henna and there dress, then they put jewelry, makeup, and all the other body items. At the actual ceremony you sit on a big square stand with jasmine surrounding you on stings. also toy have a fire, poojari (kind of like a priest), Jasmine necklaces, and al sorts of beautiful things around you and don't forget the family members and guest. After they put on the thali (like a wedding ring in the form of a necklace) they leave the marriage place and head to the grooms house. There the bride gets a velacka (Kind of like a candle but gold) and steps into the house with her right foot meaning the start of a new life. After that that pray in the prayer room and then go to the brides house to get blessing from her parents and eat/drink there. Next they might have a reception/after party or go back to the groom's house and sleep there. At night they call it the first night and at the first night the bride brings fruit and warm milk to the groom's room and they drink half and half of the milk and feed each other the fruits. The room would be decorated with Jasmin on stings and on the bed scattered around. The bride would have jasmine in her hair and wearing a sari with a seunduram on her forehead, the sign that she is married. Then they go to sleep and from that they on the bride stays at the grooms house, that is her new home.

Ganges River (Ganga)

Ganges River also known in India as the Ganga River is one of the most amazing rivers in the world and it runs through India and Bangladesh. The river is used for all sorts of purposes like bathing, swimming, plain, and for even different pooja's. The length is 1,569 miles and it's location is in Uttarakhand, India. It is worshiped as the goddess Ganga, goddess of the Holy river. It is the most sacred river of the hindu's and a lot of people live on the sides of the river and all of them depend on that one river for survival. 140 fish species live in the river, 90 amphibian, and the endangered Ganges river dolphin. In the water there is a lot of pollution going on and it affects not only the humans but also the animals that live around that area. There are many small streams that join the Ganga but the 6 major are also mainly kept sacred. It flows 160 miles through the Himalayan Valley then comes up to the mountains in Rishikesh. When it flows east it meets the Tamsa River. Yet this is a very incredible river and if it wasn't there India would have a big loss.

The government of India is different than the U.S government but at the same time is kind of alike. It is known as The Union/Central Government. There are a lot of political parties there. Congress and Maxest Party are the 2 main parties and there are also cabinet and sentient. There is a primeminister and president but the Supreme Court has the supreme power. We have a Constitution that we have to follow. Then there is a Lok Sabha and rajah sabha. Every 5 years there is an election for heads of the States. Whoever gets the majority gets to rule the government. Prime minister has all the power but the president signs everything and looks after everything, like a rubber stamp. There are 802 seats in the Parliament. Each state has a governor, chief minister, and ministers. Among the ministers defense minister is the most powerful among all the other ministers. Supreme Court can deny anything that comes along like dismiss, deny and oppose anything. If the High Court deny's something if you take it to the Supreme Court they can appeal it. Economy in India is very bad right now and everything is high priced. The currency or value of the rupees is definitely low. Since the population in India is in great amounts the rupee's are running out. It is too expensive to build buildings, roads, shops, and other things. India is on edge of the crises. The economy is the 10th largest in the world and 3rd largest by PPP (Purchasing Power parity). the economy has took a lot of loans and have not paid it back. The living cost is high but if tourists were to come they would not spend a lot of dollars but lots of rupee's.

Ayurveda

It is a safe medicine in India and most people are following the Ayurveda instead of the other medicines. The Ayurveda contains herbs, minerals, or metals. It may be harmful if your using it improperly. It comes in all forms like oils, capsules, and pastes. There are a lot of Ayurveda resorts in India and they are very popular with people. There are some Ayurveda collages and a lot of this generation kids are coming out as Ayurveda doctors. At some points we have seen these medicines cure paralyzed people that have been paralyzed for years. It is so helpful to the people of India but you have to be very careful with it. It is related with yoga and fitness and people from abroad come to take treatment and cure themselves.
