PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We are quickly approaching the end of our first marking period. Thank you for all that you are doing to partner with us, checking Infinite Campus, and encouraging on time attendance. If your student needs additional support to demonstrate their mastery in classes, please reach out to the teacher first and then the school counselor. We have many Department Centers, Supplemental Supports and resources to encourage students to do their best. We are here to help!
Counselor Updates
Our counseling team engages with students in group lessons in addition to visits to their offices. We want to highlight a few of their lesson topics and their discussion points. Students can always access their counselor throughout the school day for questions, counseling or support.
- School counselors presented in all Freshmen English classes to talk about graduation requirements, resources (both academic and social / emotional) and tips for success. You can view the presentation through your student's Class of 2026 Schoology course.
- Sophomores will see school counselors in their social studies classes and will engage in a lesson about the responsible use of social media.
- Juniors will engage in a lesson with counselors over 2 classes to update Naviance and think about the college process.
- Seniors were visited over 2 days and engaged with school counselors around the process of applying to college and careers and then followed up with 1:1 meetings. There are resources to support students through this process in the Class of 2023 Schoology Course.
WELLNESS CALENDAR
What is a Wellness Calendar?
October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month The goal of Substance Abuse Prevention is for youth to develop the tools they need to connect with peers, cope with emotions, and occupy their free time in healthy ways. Prevention aims to develop lifelong healthy habits using a balance of physical, emotional, and social strategies for well-being. During the month of October, we encourage our students, staff, and community to strengthen their healthy habits by trying new strategies or committing to using existing healthy strategies more consistently.
The strategies included in the Wellness Calendar align with the 5 CASEL Core Competencies of Social Emotional-Learning which are a focus for all of our students K-12. Encouraging our students to strengthen their social-emotional skills provides the foundation for a healthy and drug-free future.
How can my family use the Wellness Calendar?
Your family is encouraged to use the Wellness Calendar as a resource to start conversations and increase strategies. The calendar is designed for all students K-12, their families, and all West Irondequoit staff. Below are a few ideas for your family to use the calendar.
1. Follow the calendar as it is designed and allow a different family member to select 1 activity each week to try.
2. Pick 1 activity from each week and complete it at any time that works for your family.
3. Customize an activity for your family. For example, try the “I Me” exercise from 10/30 and take turns doing the exercise for each member of the family. Encourage all family members to add to each other’s list.
4. Don’t be tied to just 1 month.
Revisit these strategies throughout the year. Prevention isn’t just about 1 day or 1 month, it’s a lifestyle!
