3. Poem
This question is baffling, because I know a group of beautiful souls.
One of these souls goes by the name of Taylor,
Whose passion and force of will
Empowers and inspires me every week.
Nina, who "goes for it" and works
For girls she doesn't know
Until she knows them.
And fights for them
Until we know them too.
Jake...who I called James...
Who works wayyyyyy too hard and writes way too beautifully
for me to read
at 2 in the morning
and not be affected
until 3 in the morning.
Miss Tyndorf, whose growth and transformation
Boosted my soul.
I think of Jayson, the sarcastic wit, always ready with a quip...
As though his pockets overflowed with them.
Maybe I should check the hallways to see if any fell out there.
Peter, whose warmth and voice filled me with joy each and every time
that he smiled and said "good morning, Jadyn."
The quiet presence of Estrella, who wrote about equality and change
and empathy
And the love that she wanted to bring to the world.
Megan B., who kept me company on the phone for an hour
Talking about teaching and justice on my way back from Chicago.
I will always remember Ally's voice
As she told me I was too hard on myself, and that I was doing fine,
And I was a great teacher.
I laughed with Irene in a coffee shop
and became impressed by stories of her mother.
Lisa - who I called Huiyeon - wrote heartfelt words of personal experience
and made me glad to read them, and happy to see her each week.
Kelsey, with her strength and wisdom and leadership was a weekly presence,
which I will miss.
I will really miss her.
Katie...you will be a wonderful teacher. You will be a thoughtful teacher. You will be a kind teacher. You are all of these things to others. Thank you for your support.
And I think of Erin, whose supportive words
of kindness
of inclusivity
of understanding
bolstered our discussions and gave me hope.
I see in my mind's eye Krizia,
lovely
steadfast
ready to share.
I envision when I think of millenials, Alyssa,
waving at me from the basketball court
smiling at me from lecture
working with her group in discussion
always there, always ready, always growing.
Meghan H., whose name I could not remember for weeks
and who forgave me for weeks
and who kept coming back for more forgetfulness
thank you so much for your forgiveness.
I think, when I want to remember someone who surprised me,
and who is always present and ready,
of Rain.
I think, when I want to call up a wonderful soul,
of Fiona.
I think, when I want to call up the image of effervescence
joy
heart
passion
empathy
and a dangerous force to be reckoned with,
of Carli.
I think, when I want to call up in my mind
some of the most lovely writing I've seen to date,
of Dolly.
I think, when I want to smile,
of Annie.
There's Sam
who pushes for equality and writes about pain and love.
I envision, when I want to call up someone who inspired me in August,
of Emily K.
I call up Raven in my mind when I think of someone
this semester
who has brought tears to my eyes
with her strength
compassion
and versatility.
Sarah, you have been consistently present and there for this class.
A constant steadiness that does not waver.
I have appreciated
the quiet strength of Hannah.
I have appreciated the connection from Caroline,
emails and texts,
wonderful writing, caring thoughts...
And then there is Joel, with his gentleness.
His kind spirit and his willingness to dive into a problem.
His connection to the group...any group he was a part of.
What is it like to work with millenials?
Please see above.
