"Let us rediscover the beauty of praying the #Rosary at home during May! At the end of each Rosary, we can recite a prayer asking for Mary’s intercession, that the Lord might free us from this pandemic and life might serenely resume its normal course."

Building Classroom Communities Together

Together in partnership with you, we strive to ensure that every child experiences success; personally, emotionally, spiritually and academically. One aspect of committing to this goal is creating classroom environments that will ensure each child succeeds. Creating class communities each year is an arduous process that involves many factors and many members of the OLA Learning Team.

There are an enormous number of factors that the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School Learning Team endeavors to consider when composing class communities; compatibility with peers, social and emotional growth levels, gender, achievement levels, English Language learning, special and unique needs, equality of class size, to name a few. Specific teacher request is not part of the formula used in creating class dynamics.

Please feel confident that the teacher, with whom your child spends the year, never works in isolation. OLA staff work together to build the best possible programs for children in each grade, and they endeavor to help each child enjoy their time in school and experience as much success as possible. We want your child to succeed as much as you do.

Your Voice in this Process Matters!

As parents, and your child’s first teachers, you have specific understanding of your child’s compatibility with peers, social ability, unique needs, or personal family situations that may be unknown to your child’s teacher. We invite you to share this valuable information and specific details helping us understand “the why” so that it may be taken into consideration as one more factor considered when placing your child in a particular grouping context.

Requests involving specific peers may be considered upon receipt of a mirrored request from their peer’s family. Requests for specific classroom placements, non-classroom placements, or specific teachers is outside of the purview of the information requested.

Thank you for your cooperation, trust, and respect regarding your child’s education. Know that we are equally concerned for your little ones and the experiences they encounter as they journey from kindergarten to high school with EICS. We are confident in the academic, interpersonal and faith contexts of Catholic Education as a positive and integral role in your child's development.

Current Grade 4 Students

Our current grade 4 students will be joining their St. John XXIII Catholic School friends at St. John Paul II Catholic School next year for Grade 5. The creation of class communities occurs with the St. John Paul II Catholic School Learning Teams in consultation with the Learning Teams at OLA and SJXXIII. As St. John Paul II Catholic School Learning Team maintains a global perspective of their school context, finalization of Grade 5 class lists rests with St. JPII’s fantastic Learning Team. Classroom allocation letters submitted to Mme Gravelle will be shared with St. JPII’s Learning Team.

Letter Submissions

As the classroom allocation process is complicated, collaborative and requires significant time to complete with all students’ success at the heart of each decision, it is of utmost importance that we receive the above information directly to Mme Gravelle, by Thursday May 7, 2020 2019. Requests received after this date will not be considered. Thank you for honouring the May 7th submission date and submitting them directly to Mme Gravelle via her confidential email account: pamgr@eics.ab.ca. If teachers receive these requests they have been directed to send them directly to Mme Gravelle without being read.

With great hope and joy, we begin building for another successful year at OLA. Should you have questions, please contact Mme Gravelle via email: pamgr@eics.ab.ca.

EICS School Fees Information

Since the announcement by the Minister of Education in March of to cancel all in-school classes we realize that in this current public health crisis and economic challenging times that many of our families have questions about school fees.

If you have specific questions about fees, please do not hesitate to reach out to EICS Transportation at: transportation@eics.ab.ca for information about busing fees, or your school administration for all other school fees.

How did EICS determine the transportation fees?

EICS Transportation Department provides transportation service to about 2500 students across a number of communities. Due to a number of unanticipated costs, the department is running a deficit. The result is either reducing current service levels or charging fees in order to maintain a balanced budget. For the 2020-2021 school year, a base fee for riders living greater than 2.4 km from the designated school has been instituted since the funding received from the government does not meet the cost of the service.

Due to cancellation of classes, will there be a refund for EICS Transportation fees that I paid for 2019-2020?

A 35% credit/refund will be allotted. Transportation fees collected for the 2019-2020 school year will be credited based on 3.5/10 months. The credit will appear in your child’s PowerSchool account after May 15th. These credits will be applied to your child’s 2020-2021 transportation fees. Should your child not require the services next year, a refund will be issued after you contact the EICS Transportation Department at transportation@eics.ab.ca.

What about refunds for school fees for this year?

Pre-Kindergarten refunds have all been processed. If you have not received a cheque by Friday, May 8, 2020, please contact your school. For all other school fees, schools are working on calculating the prorated amounts and will apply them to student accounts by the end of May.

What is the process for receiving either a credit or refund?

Most school fee adjustments will result in a credit on the student account to be applied to next year's fees. The refund procedures will be relayed to parents once they have been calculated and applied directly to their EICS account. If resources are outstanding, no cheque refunds or credits will be given until they have been returned to the school. (i.e. library books & textbooks which are returned to the school as per usual at the end of classes).

When will EICS be releasing information on the school fees for the 2020-2021 school year?

School fees are currently being reviewed and will be approved by the EICS Board of Trustees at an upcoming meeting. Once approved, we will be sharing this in a variety of ways, including school council meetings and our school websites prior to next year.

EICS has created a listing of resources for families during the pandemic - including the Financial and Community Support Page, please visit: https://www.eics.ab.ca/coronavirus-information-in-eics/parent-resources to learn more.

Routine is Key to Success!

Today’s world has changed so much in such a little time and so many of us are currently facing challenges in our lives that are producing a lot of stress and uncertainty right now. We understand that keeping our children on track with their learning can be quite difficult when we are all trying to manage so many other things at the same time. Having a predictable routine can help both adults and children find peace and purpose to their days and can set us up for success with online learning and all of the other tasks that other family members need to attend to during the day. It's all for Family Wellness.

Here are some ideas that can help you create and establish a predictable routine so that your child will be ready for learning each day.

School Council Meeting Success

Congratulations OLA Families! We had 15 attendees for our School Council meeting last week! Thank you to our moms and dads who were able to attend and participate in exceptional conversation, discussion and idea sharing to move forward together! Working through this "virtually" together, certainly opens possibilities next year so more families can participate. :-)

If you missed the meeting, fret not! We recorded it! Truth be told, we thought we recorded it in "Grid View." Thank you for your patience as we continue to learn the ins and outs of this technology.
