McClure Message Summer Update
August 12, 2022
While the end of summer freedom is always a little bittersweet for all of us, I am looking forward to having our halls buzzing with our excited students again. The start of school brings chances to reconnect with friends, opportunities to meet new teachers and classmates, and engage in new content in classes. I am looking forward to a fantastic year learning and having fun together at McClure.
Some quick notes:
Today is the last day for Registration! Please call or email Mrs. Kelly Fuhr (708-485-2009, kfuhr@d101.org) if you are experiencing difficulties with the registration in Powerschool. If you need to drop off payment checks, please bring them to locker set-up times next week.
There are still slots available for Sports Physicals. Please click HERE to sign up for a spot.
Please read on for more details about the start of this school year!
McClure Student/Parent Handbook
This year we've spent time updating our McClure handbook (no more mention of iPods!), and clarifying our building-wide policies. This handbook can answer lots of questions as a first resource and will always be linked at the bottom of my weekly updates as well as available on our website.
Please take a look through the handbook with your child and have conversations about the items within. Let me know if you have questions. In next week's update I'll ask for an electronic confirmation that you've reviewed the handbook at home.
Schedule pick-up / Locker set-up
Wednesday August 17 8am - Noon “6th grade only” day so new sixth graders can meet classmates and have time in the building together. 6th graders are welcome to come back Thursday and Friday if they'd like more time or extra locker practice.
Thursday August 18 8am - Noon
Friday August 19 8am - 4pm Expanded hours in case you need an afternoon time!
Parents may accompany their child, but do not need to. Students are welcome to come on their own or with a group of friends.
Bringing school supplies for the locker helps make the first day backpack a bit lighter. Tissue boxes can be dropped off near the main office.
While in the past many students come early to check things out, it is not a necessity.
Any student who still needs materials will receive them on the first day of school.
6th graders get lots of practice time and support the first few weeks of school.
Materials pickup
- 6th graders will exchange their Chromebook. (Please keep the old case at home and just bring in the Chromebook and charger.)
- 6th graders will receive a PE uniform. (7th and 8th graders can also pick up a replacement or larger size if needed.)
- Assignment Notebook
- Calculator -if purchased in
- Schedule and Locker Combo - This is on a sticker that we put inside the assignment notebook. A word of caution...because this also has the locker combination on it please warn kids not to text it in a photo to friends!
- District Print Calendar - Each family that has joined the McClure Parent Council will receive a large printed calendar. We also have a limited number of large ($4.00) and small ($3.00) calendars for purchase. Proceeds benefit the McClure Parent Council.
PE locks will be distributed to 6th graders during PE classes in the first few days of class. 7th and 8th graders should bring locks from the previous year, or purchase a replacement from the main office.

Parent Resources
Lyons District 101 and the Lyons Township schools along with our parent partners will continue to to sponsor parent information evenings that I will communicate to you throughout the school year. A year-long resource that you may want to take advantage of is the Glenbard Parent Series. This free offering has an impressive lineup of speakers on topics of interest. I'll highlight speakers, who are primarily presenting virtually, when they have particular interest to our junior high focus. Please see the informational brochure here.
This coming Thursday is a presentation by Sarah Ward, an expert in executive functioning. Ms. Ward's expertise is in helping kids develop the cognitive skills to help them operate successfully in school and in life. Executive functioning includes higher level thinking skills such as organization, prioritization, and time management. Junior high is a time when students are ripe for developing these skills.
