Newsletter #2: Sharing the Planet
What Are We Learning This Unit?
Our Unit of Inquiry
We started by differentiating between conflicts and fighting. Conflicts are disagreements. Fighting can happen as a result of conflicts, but they are not the same thing. We also talked about whether conflict was bad. As a class, we agreed that conflict itself was not a bad thing. However, the choices we make in dealing with the conflict are what can be good or bad.
Next, we learned about Active Listening. Using the following checklist we practiced this important skill with a partner:
Active Listening Checklist:
- Focus on the person speaking
- Show by the tone of your voice, your friendly expression, and your "body language" that you are interested and want to be helpful.
- Don't interrupt.
- Accept the person's feelings without judgment.
- Paraphrase what they say to be sure you understood.
We also learned about communicating by using I-messages. These are a way of being assertive and telling others how we feel and what we want to happen.
Individually, we have been doing research about historical conflicts. We have looked into different events in history, and investigated the different questions:
- Who was involved in the conflict?
- Why was there a conflict?
- When and where did the conflict take place?
- What happened at the end? Was the conflict resolved?
We are collecting our findings and posting them on our Padlet page.
Math
We are also diving into multiplication and division during this unit of inquiry. We are learning about multiplying multidigit numbers with single digit numbers in 3 different ways. First we learn to apply the area model to the multiplication. Next, we learn the partial products method. Finally, we end with the standard algorithm for multiplication. This will take us to the midpoint of the module. After we have mastered multiplication, we will begin division, insha Allah. If you are interested in learning more about the ways we multiply, please see the link below.

They also learned about the treaty of Al-Hudaibiyah and how the prophet's companions felt that it was not fair that he accepted the agreement with all of the unfair conditions. However, at the end, they knew that it was a great victory from Allah (SWT) as He mentioned in the Qur'an " إنا فتحنا لك فتحاً مبيناً".
