Cyber Friday

Cyber Friday is a new weekly feature that we hope will help parents and students navigate the complex technology and internet environment. We will bring some information forward each week that we feel is important for families to know. These will range from the intricacies of how certain apps work to conversations about what happens on phones and online. Our first cyber Friday post will dive into the world of SnapChat. Feel free to send us suggestions if you have ideas for future posts.

What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows you to create a secure connection to another network over the Internet. VPNs mask your internet protocol (IP) address so your online actions are virtually untraceable. Most important, VPN services establish secure and encrypted connections to provide greater privacy than even a secured Wi-Fi hotspot. Why would a kid want to use a VPN? This article provides some answers.

First Chapter Friday

It’s week two of March Madness! This week’s First Chapter Friday pick is Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang. It’s a rare gem: a non-fiction graphic novel. Gene doesn’t get sports. As a kid, his friends called him “Stick” and every basketball game he played ended in pain. He lost interest in basketball long ago, but at the high school where he now teaches, it's all anyone can talk about. The boys varsity team, the Dragons, is having a phenomenal season that’s been decades in the making. Each victory brings them closer to their ultimate goal: the California State Championships. Gene knows he has to follow this epic to its end. What he doesn’t know yet is that this season is not only going to change the Dragons’ lives, but his own life as well.

High School Transitioning

On Tuesday, March 22 our grade nine students will be heading over to Bev Facey High School to check out the high school and get information for their upcoming year. Students will have the opportunity to check out the option spaces and get information that will be consistent in all high schools.

On April 7 & 8 Bev Facey administration and counsellors will be coming over to register students for high school.

We will be working with students going over the Salisbury and set up a time to finish their registrations.

Junior Badminton Team

We have found ourselves in need of some help coaching our junior badminton team (grade 7 and 8 students). The season is one of the shortest of any teams we run here at Haythorne. It runs from the middle of March to the end of April. If you would like to coach or know someone who could help coach, please let the office know.

2022 EIPS Parent Survey

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) wants to hear from you. Make sure to complete the 2022 EIPS Parent Survey—open from March 14-27.


Annually, EIPS conducts a parent survey to gauge its progress toward meeting the goals and priorities outlined in its Four-Year Education Plan. Families are asked a series of questions about their experiences with EIPS and the school their child attends, the overall performance of the Division, the quality of education being provided to students and areas for improvement. The survey feedback helps the Division develop new strategies to better serve students and the wider community.

NOTE: The survey is anonymous and only takes a few minutes to complete. If you want to share the experience of more than one child attending an EIPS school, simply complete the survey again.

Measuring Success: Complete this year’s Alberta Education Assurance Survey

Once again, Alberta Education is surveying teachers, students and families through its annual Alberta Education Assurance (AEA) Survey. The survey acts as an annual check-up on the province’s education system. Every year, Alberta Education conducts the survey to gather information about the quality of education provided by Alberta schools and school authorities. The survey looks at various measures such as education quality, citizenship, family involvement, engagement levels, school climate and student wellness.


Throughout March, Grade 7 students and teachers at F.R. Haythorne are completing the survey online at the school. Student participation is voluntary and completely anonymous. Students are assigned a random username and password to ensure survey responses aren’t linked to any individual student. The survey doesn’t take long to complete and is done within the school day during regular class time.


Additionally, parents and guardians of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 are also asked to take a survey, either online or by mail. Alberta Education will send families information about the survey directly. As with the student and teacher survey, it’s anonymous and asks questions about your school experiences. If you have a child in grades 4, 7 or 10, we encourage you to participate. The survey deadline is March 25, 2022.


Results from the AEA Survey are provided to Elk Island Public Schools each spring. The Division then uses the data to inform its four-year education plan, school education plans and strategies for continuous improvement. Each fall, the results are also shared with EIPS families and school communities in the Division’s Annual Education Results Report.

ChatterHigh Pilot Program

Throughout Semester 2, F.R. Haythorne is one of six schools within the Division piloting ChatterHigh—piloted in the Health Classes. ChatterHigh is an online platform designed to help schools engage with families about ways to support their child in preparing for life after senior high—in terms of career planning and life-skills preparation.

ChatterHigh comes with college and career exploration activities, well-being, social and emotional learning, and other regionally specific supplemental curriculum. The platform also boasts a gamified seek-and-find activity that helps expand awareness, foster hope and prepare learners for life after high school. There’s also a daily career exploration quiz that guides students through college and university websites to build knowledge of the possibilities, capture interests and spark conversation. The daily quiz takes approximately 10 minutes. Each quiz asks students a new set of questions and becomes more personalized over time.

Students will complete the daily quiz at school on the days they have Health. Additionally, because this is a digital platform, students can also complete the daily quiz independently. Over time, the quizzes help learners develop a personalized interest profile and discover new and exciting career options. Students can then use the information to research education and career pathways and learn tips to support career-development course work and decisions after senior high. Overall, the daily quiz will create a learning environment, exposing students to all families of majors, and aid them in exploring areas of interest.

In June, the Division will review the pilot’s success and determine how to potentially expand it to more schools next year.

First Nations, Metis and Inuit learning

EIPS First Nations, Métis, and Inuit team invite you to join their upcoming virtual gatherings. It is a great way to make connections, create a supportive environment for dialogue, share hopes and ideas, and learn what’s happening around the Division. We’re grateful to Elder Wilson Bearhead for attending the virtual gatherings last school year and agreeing to open each gathering again this year.
