Announcements
I am happy to announce that we will be having a Teacher Candidate from Cal State San Marcos in our classroom this semester! Ms. Kinsey started last week and will be in our class every Thursday for the next 6 weeks. After that, she will spend 8 weeks in the classroom full-time. I am delighted to have her join our class!
We are officially in Semester 2! First semester report cards will be sent home on February 14, and will reflect progress towards proficiency through the end of January. It's amazing to think your students are only 1 semester away from middle school!
Looking ahead to next week, we will have two short weeks in a row. There is no school on Friday, February 15 or Monday, February 18.
We could use a few supplies in our classroom: Kleenex and Clorox Wipes. If you happen to stop by Target, Walmart, etc. over the next few days and wouldn't mind donating to the classroom, the students and I would really appreciate it!

This week, we will be starting our owl pellet dissection. As a part of this unit, we will be learning about an owl's ecosystem and its place in the food web. We will also be learning about the body systems an owl has to help it survive, as well as the skeletal systems of humans and rodents as we work through the dissection. All of this will be done in class, and completed skeletons will be on display at Open House on March 28th.
This week, your student will be bringing home information about upcoming Science Fair projects. Topic ideas are due to me by Tuesday, February 5th (please ask your child for the letter that was sent home about this on Friday...it is either on purple or yellow paper.) Please note that a successful Science Fair project idea includes a question that can be explored through an experiment that includes MEASURABLE results (examples: a change in temperature, a change in height, counting leaves or spots of mold, measuring changes height, speed of heating/melting, etc.) Some science activities, like making slime, are just hands-on activities...although they are fun to do and may be interesting, they do not include measurable results. For this project, students must be able to collect data and represent it in charts/graphs. I want your student to find a topic that is really interesting to them and design an experiment that will measure the question they are trying to answer. For some ideas, you might consider visiting www.sciencebuddies.org. A packet with project requirements and instructions will be sent home tomorrow. The projects are due by Monday, March 25th. Students will present their projects to the class, and all projects will be on display at Open House on March 28th.
