Girls on the Run Spring 2019 & Volunteer Coach Opportunity

We are looking for parents and community members who are interested in serving as volunteer coaches for a 3rd-5th grade Girls on the Run (GOTR) program at Claxton in Spring 2019! You don't need to be a runner to be a coach! If you'd like to learn more, visit for a short video which is followed by written info about GOTR coaching. Contact Claxton's Volunteer Coordinator at if you're interested in being a part of Claxton's coaching team!

Boys' Claxton Flyers are Off and Running! Interested Adult Volunteers Are Welcome!

Our Claxton Flyers' 4th and 5th grade boys' group has kicked off their running season and is meeting twice weekly. The program is designed to inspire boys through the power of running to be themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle. Practices lead up to participation in the Hot Chocolate 5K (3 mile) event on Sat, 1/26. Volunteer help is always welcome to support our group! Please contact Tricia Johnson ( or Derek Edwards ( if you'd like to get involved as an adult volunteer!

Holiday Shop Cancelled

Due to our recent winter storm and school cancellation, the PTO Holiday Shop has been cancelled for this year. Thanks to Joanna Best for her efforts preparing this fun event for our students!

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer!

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.

All trainings are held at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

The full ACS Volunteer Training Schedule for 2018-2019 is linked here. Dates coming soon include--
