Ruby Bridges - where the STARS come to shine!

Hello from the principal's desk!
Nov 1, 2017
Good evening all!
We certainly had an exciting day after Halloween over here at Ruby Bridges! We started our day with the Student Council speeches from an amazing group of kids! The entire student body in grades 3-5 gathered to listen and watch our candidates do their best to try and get their votes this morning. Look below for a picture of the group. I think they are a true representation of our beautiful community. The kids did great, really great. I look forward to finding out who won the election! Special thanks to Kristin Furuichi-Fong and Andrea Perez, our Student Council advisers for organizing the event today.
On another note, we have another Spirit Day coming up this Friday, November 3rd. We are doing Traditional Dress day! Please have your child come in their traditional dress from their home country, representing their home culture. Hopefully we will see more examples of the tremendous diversity that is our Ruby Bridges Elementary school.
Also, we received the 30 copies of the book Wonder yesterday. Again, look below for a pic. We want to get as many kids to read this book as possible. We are going to focus on our 4th and 5th grade students at first. We also want parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to read the book too! We do this in preparation of the release of the Wonder movie, set for a few weeks from now. I think this movie, staring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson is going to be a big deal. The story fits in exceptionally well with the character traits we have talked about thus far at Ruby Bridges - Compassion & Collaboration. We plan on having a book club discussion about Wonder at a community event and potluck on January 18th here at Ruby Bridges. #ChooseKind. Check out our newest RBStars podcast on this topic below! More to come.
We have an Art display up at Cafe Jolie right now! Can you PLEASE stop by for lunch and remark on the beautiful work our kids have done? They are a new location for the Alameda Ed Foundation (AEF) Art Across the Island program, and we want them to know we noticed and are proud!
One last note, that I added the lunch menu down at the bottom of The Star! Hope it helps you decide when to have your child eat here at school! Yum!
The next trait of the month for November is Patience. Be patient...
With gratitude,
Jesse Woodward

WoooWeee! The Grand Opening was a grand success last week!! We had so many amazing visitors, including Alameda Mayor Spencer, Superintendent McPhetridge, Chief Academic Officer Fong, several Alameda County Office of Ed staff, and most importantly you, the amazing RB families and teachers! Students had a fab time walking around and creating at all of the stations. LEAPS Afterschool also got in on the action during class rotations, so thanks Ms. Helena for helping organize that. We also got so many fun photos at the entrance that you can check out on the PTA Facebook page.
A special thanks to Ms. Wu and Ms. Furuichi-Fong for helping with planning the activities and setup. Also, a big thanks to Joe Golling, parent extraordinaire, who helped create the photo backdrop during his 5th grade Medialab and for all of his amazing work/photo taking/3D printing at the Grand Opening! Finally a HUGE shout out to my STEAM Team 5th graders and Medialab crew who did all of the leg work and artwork to pull off such an amazing event! I’m so proud of you all!! Please come by to say hello sometime and pick up a wish list & Remind code flyer that I unfortunately forgot to hand out last week!
