This Week at Brookside...
Remote Learning Edition 3: April 2020
Week 6 Update
Dear Brookside Families!
We hope you are doing well and staying safe. Mrs. James has included various resources to help you navigate the challenges of COVID-19, especially when speaking about it with your children, as well as reminders for how to reinforce good hygiene and practice healthy habits.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and continued partnership.

Elementary Standards - Based Report Card
Standards-based report cards are coming to the Westwood Regional elementary schools! Principals and the assistant principal, along with the elementary teacher leaders have spent several months collaborating a framework of the new report card. Our new grading system will allow teachers to better reflect upon the critical learning standards in the current curriculum by supporting the educational growth and progression of our students.
Stay tuned for further information!
Spring has sprung!
Although the calendar tells us it is Spring, the weather still remains a little chilly. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't get outside and enjoy a little fresh air.
Here are four great reasons children should be outdoors:
Strengthens the immune system
Helps burn extra energy
Promotes problem solving and cognitive thinking
Boosts vitamin D levels and uplifts mood
So, check the daily weather, and be aware of current forecasts. Remember, there is no bad weather, just wrong clothing. So, get outside and have a little fun!

Girl Scouts Going Strong With Virtual Activities
Despite the stay-at-home order, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is going strong. They have created exciting, engaging virtual activities for girls, pre-K to grade 3 -- even for girls who aren't registered Scouts!
Fourth Grade Readers Not Breaking Stride
During remote learning, Brookside teachers have found creative ways to continue read-alouds with their classes. Read-alouds not only encourage a joy of reading, but they also help develop comprehension, build vocabulary and listening skills, as well as assist children in making connections. In fourth grade, Mrs. Acosta, Mrs. Arditti, and Mrs. Fodor record read-alouds so their students can enjoy books, including "A Long Walk to Water" and "Finding Gobi." Then the teachers create a discussion page to give students a place to talk about the book. They also talk about the books during 'live' meetings online.
