Growing Saints

Family Newsletter * October 27, 2022

"This is what we are about: we plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise."

-Attributed to Archbishop Oscar Romeo

From the Principal's Office...

Thank you to everyone who walked, and collected pledges and donations for our Walk-a-thon. We raised just over $3300 this year! Amazing!

On Monday, we handed out Uniform Holiday passes to each student who turned in pledges. This pass can be used for a uniform holiday on a date of your child's choosing. (Not redeemable on Mass Days or days with specified uniform dress code.)

I had a chat with friends in fifth and sixth grade, (Gentlemen, you know who you are!) We will be officially ending "Shorts Season" for 2022 on Tuesday, November 1. As of Tuesday, students should choose long pants over shorts until Spring. We agreed to negotiate the reopening of "Shorts Season" as the weather gets warmer.

St. Therese and Sts. Cyril and Methodius, pray for us!

Virtue of the Week October 31-November: Circumspection

Definition: Careful consideration of circumstances and consequences

Prayer: Dear Jesus, my actions affect not just myself, but others. Please give me the wisdom to think before acting. Please give me the gift of counsel, that I may act in the best way at each moment of the day.

Trunk or Treat-October 28

TECHNOLOGY GLITCH: Something went awry in our Student Information System and our permission slips for the Costume Parade tomorrow are gone. We are so sorry to ask you to do it twice, but if you could, please, take a moment to log into your Family Portal and give your child/ren permission to walk with us to Mrs. Betty's house, we would all be grateful! We have contacted support and we know that we are not alone. Some poor folks are unable to access any information, so we are counting our blessings.

Tomorrow is our celebration! It is an Orange and Black Color day. Students may wear Halloween colors, but please, send costumes separately. They will have time to change before the parade. We will be marching in a Costume Parade to Miss Betty's house and then come back to Trunk or Treat in the parking lot. Because we are going a short distance off school property, there is a permission slip for the Costume Parade. In the case of rain, we will set up tables throughout the building and "Table Treat" in the hallways.

REMINDER: Costumes should not include weapons, blood, or gore. Students should not wear their costumes to school.

If you would like to participate by handing out candy, please contact Jessica in the office. Bonus points for decorating your car or van!

As always, for the safety of our students, volunteers must be Virtus trained and have a current criminal background check on file.

All Hallow's Eve Retreat-October 31

On Monday, October 31, as part of our All Hallow's Eve Retreat, we will be introducing our school families for this school year. School families are cross-age groups of students who have the opportunity to get to know each other, support each other, and have fun together throughout the school. Each family consists of students from preschool to sixth grade.

During our Retreat on Monday, students will prepare for All Saint's Day by learning about Saints, how Saints are named and what we can learn from them. Each school family will then choose a Patron Saint and create a Banner to hang in the cafeteria this coming year to represent their school family.

Our retreat will include some quiet time to reflect on how we can be saints right here and now.

The final task for our school families will be to put together a Litany to be used in our prayer service on Wednesday for All Soul's Day. Students are encouraged to bring to school a picture or token which represents someone from their family who has passed away. All of the pictures will be used in a display during the prayer service and then will be on display in the trophy case for the month of November. Please be sure any pictures or items sent to school are clearly and securely labeled.

This retreat meets the National Standards and Benchmarks for Excellent Catholic Schools Standard 3: An excellent Catholic school adhering to mission provides opportunities outside the classroom for student faith formation, participation in liturgical and communal prayer, and action in service of social justice and Benchmark 3.2: Every student is offered timely, regular, and age-appropriate opportunities to reflect on their life experiences and faith through retreats and other spiritual experiences.

Fr. Evelio's Naturalization Day!

The date has been set! Fr. Evelio will be taking the Oath of Citizenship on Thursday, November 10 at Herrick Library in Holland. Stay tuned for celebration details!

Help Needed

The virtual auction during Catholic Schools Week is a big hit and raises money for our Home and School group. They support so many of the activities and extras throughout the year. In order to have donations for the auction, we need to start now. Our urgent need right now is for someone to put together the donor letters. We have the letters, envelopes, and stamps. If you are willing to help make it happen for our school, let us know!
